The Chevrolet Silverado 3500 is a large heavy-duty pickup truck. With a maximum towing capacity of 36,000 pounds—that’s 18 tons!—there’s very little the Silverado 3500 can’t tow. Various factors may impact towing capacity, including weight of passengers, cargo, and options/accessories. The Silverado 3500 has a handful of competitors such as the Ford F-350, Ram 3500, and its corporate sibling, the GMC Sierra 3500.
For 2024, the Silverado 3500 gets a considerable number of updates. The front end has been restyled to match the Silverado 2500. The available 6.6L turbocharged V8 diesel engine gets a bump in power to 470 hp and 975 lb-ft of torque. Both the diesel and standard gas V8 engines get a new 10-speed transmission that replaces the six-speed from years prior. LT trims and higher receive an updated interior, which features a 13.4-inch infotainment display and a 12.3-inch screen for the gauge cluster. From a tech perspective, the Silverado 3500 gets adaptive cruise control, plus a few other features to make towing easier. Finally, an off-road-focused ZR2 trim makes its debut for the 2024 model year.
Hauling: When you're not towing your fifth wheel, you can carry any combination of beds, dressers, and various household furniture items in the back of the Silverado 3500. The payload maxes out at more than 7,200 pounds—impressive.
Brisk acceleration: The updated optional 6.6-liter turbodiesel is the key to the Silverado 3500’s big towing numbers and impressive acceleration. Its massive torque and more-than-sufficient horsepower won't let you down on the street or the highway.
Small-item storage: The Silverado 3500 has pockets everywhere: the front and rear doors, the center console, and two glove boxes. This is perfect for storing items such as a laptop, water bottles, and more. If you can't find a place for your items in this truck, you probably have too much stuff.
Visibility: Thick windshield and door pillars give the 3500 several blind spots. The large towing mirrors help with lane changes, but knowing where this truck's corners are can be challenging. A rearview camera is standard but you'll need to pay extra for the surround-view camera, which is only found on the top High Country trim.
