The Chevrolet Silverado 3500 is a large heavy-duty pickup truck. When properly equipped, it can tow a whopping 36,000 pounds—that’s 18 tons—and while that is very impressive, it comes up a bit short compared to its competitors. Various factors may impact towing capacity, including weight of passengers, cargo, and options/accessories. It only has a few competitors such as the Ford F-350, the Ram 3500, and its corporate sibling, the GMC Sierra 3500.
Changes were minimal to the 2023 Silverado 3500, with the most notable being the addition of heated and power-operated towing mirrors. Its competitors received updates more recently, which leaves this Silverado with an interior that looks older and less appealing than the others. If a nicer cabin is important, you can either look at the GMC Sierra or the 2024 Silverado, which addressed that issue and more. Overall, this Silverado is a very good heavy-duty truck, but it doesn't really stand out in any particular area.
Hauling: The Silverado 3500 excels at hauling any combination of beds, dressers, and various pieces of household furniture in its cargo bay. The payload maxes out at just over 7,000 pounds.
Solid powertrain: The optional 6.6-liter turbodiesel is an impressive engine that gives the Silverado 3500 strong towing numbers. Its low-end torque helps with off-the-line acceleration and shifts from the six-speed automatic are smooth, even under full-throttle acceleration.
Interior storage: The Silverado 3500 has plenty of pockets: the front and rear doors, the center console, and two glove boxes. These are perfect for storing items such as a laptop, tools, water bottles, and more. There's a place for nearly every item you'd want to keep on hand when on the road.
Needs better visibility: Sizable windshield and door pillars give the 3500 a few blind spots. Its large towing mirrors help with lane changes, but knowing where this truck's corners are can be tough. A rearview camera comes standard, but if you want the multi-angle surround-view camera, you'll need to opt for the top High Country trim.
