Subcompact sport-utility vehicles deliver the promise of essential transportation, easy maneuvering, and an ability to conjure parking spaces from thin air. We don’t expect much sport or utility out of mini SUVs, but the 2022 Chevrolet Trax is an exception on the latter. A smartly designed interior maximizes the small footprint with nearly 50 cubic feet of cargo space and ample passenger room. It’s easy to park and maneuver, with especially good outward visibility, doesn’t require contortions to get in or out, and its seats are surprisingly comfortable.
An engine upgrade for 2022 gives the Trax more power, although acceleration is still best described as leisurely. The fold-flat front passenger seat was also inexplicably discontinued, reducing a bit of versatility typical of earlier models. The Trax has been among today’s most affordable pocket-sized city hoppers. But buyers who can stretch their budgets may want to consider the more dynamic Mazda CX-30, rugged Jeep Renegade, or even the slightly bigger intra-family rival Chevy Trailblazer.
Versatility: The Trax is small, but the cabin is big. It offers more passenger space than its Honda and Mazda peers and its foldable 60/40-split rear seats add cargo flexibility. With nearly 19 cubic feet behind the rear seats when upright, the Trax offers useful luggage space, and its 48 cubic feet of maximum cargo space — about the size of two washing machines — is impressive for a car that measures the same length as a Volkswagen Golf.
Comfort: Small cars demand sacrifices, but the Trax makes smart compromises. Its tall ride height and high roof make it easy to get in and out, and there’s adequate headroom and legroom, even for taller rear passengers. The soft seats remain comfortable even during long stints, aided by driver’s side power adjustments.
Value: The 2022 Trax packs a lot into its small and versatile package. The base 2022 Trax LS comes equipped with 16-inch wheels, a rearview camera, a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ smartphone integration, and even a Wi-Fi hotspot, although that requires a cellular plan.
Performance: Expectations for a subcompact economy SUV should be tempered. That said, the Trax falls short of even some standard baselines. With just 155 hp from the small four-cylinder engine, you’ll need patience while accelerating to highway speeds. Passing maneuvers also require some planning. Handling isn’t a strong point either, even though small vehicles like the Trax often make for some fun in corners. For enthusiastic driving in a similarly sized package, buyers can look to the Mazda CX-30 or Ford EcoSport.
