For 2022 the Ford EcoSport gets standard all-wheel drive on all trims while losing its weak three-cylinder base engine. Both changes improve the EcoSport, but it remains at a disadvantage in the competitive subcompact SUV segment. It continues to offer impressive passenger and cargo space for its size, plus the capable SYNC® 3 technology interface, but in terms of power, refinement, and advanced driver-assist technology it simply doesn't measure up to class standards. The EcoSport is offered in S, SE, SES, and Titanium trim levels, all powered by a 166-horsepower engine driving all four wheels. Its six-speed automatic adds to the EcoSport's drivetrain woes, as it sometimes struggles to pick a gear quickly. Fuel economy is a disappointing EPA-estimated 25 mpg combined. Fuel economy figures are based on EPA estimates for when vehicle sold as new. Fuel economy may vary for reasons like driving conditions and vehicle history. Unless specified, figures are for vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission. See fueleconomy.gov.
While the EcoSport's roomy interior and intuitive SYNC 3 infotainment system are appealing, its lack of power, refinement, and advanced driver-assistance technology put it at a distinct disadvantage against more impressive entries, including the Chevrolet Trailblazer, Honda HR-V, Kia Seltos, and Hyundai Venue.
Cargo space: With more than 20 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second-row seat, a figure that more than doubles (50 cubic feet) with the seat folded down, the 2022 EcoSport matches or exceeds the carrying capacity of most subcompact SUVs. Additional storage space comes in the form of a tall center console and functional door pockets.
Passenger comfort: Supportive seats and a quiet cabin should keep passengers happy, and the second-row seat is elevated to improve leg support and forward visibility. Passenger space is impressive for a subcompact SUV, but taller passengers will feel cramped in the second row.
Technology: The EcoSport S comes standard with a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot
Performance: The 2022 Ford EcoSport drops the weak base engine, but the larger four-cylinder still doesn't measure up to subcompact SUV standards, either in terms of power or estimated fuel economy. The EcoSport is also missing basic driver aids like forward collision warning and lane departure warning, which are neither standard nor optional. It does include blind-spot warning, an important standard feature given the EcoSport's thick roof pillars.
