The GMC Terrain compact SUV has upscale styling and a premium feel, especially in the upscale Denali trim. The newly updated and ruggedly handsome exterior echoes the rest of the GMC lineup, and the interior offers up plenty of creature comforts and easy-to-use technology.
The Terrain’s quiet interior has firm and supportive front seats that are good for long road trips. Upscale touches include a stitched dash and separate heating controls for the seat bottom and seatback. Cargo space is a bit smaller than some competitors, but the Terrain’s flat-folding front passenger seat accommodates long items, and we like the hands-free power tailgate. Some controls are frustrating to use, especially the awkward gear-selector buttons located low on the dash.
For 2022, GMC introduced a new AT4 trim level that gives the Terrain a bit more capability off-road. However, the sole drivetrain remains the 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. This makes the Terrain one of the slower vehicles in its class, and fuel economy can’t quite match many of its competitors.
Technology: Every 2022 GMC Terrain comes standard with wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ smartphone integration, accessed through an easy-to-use touchscreen interface. The Terrain also sports four standard USB ports for charging, with two more available on higher trims. Standard driver assist features include automatic emergency braking and forward collision alert, lane keeping departure warning and assist, and even automatic high beams. We suggest looking for Terrains with the optional Pro Safety Plus package, which adds adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.
Interior Comfort: There’s no question that the Terrain’s interior is a comfortable place to spend time. The seats are firm and supportive, and the side cushions manage a good balance between holding you in place and not intruding when you want to get in or out. The interior quiet contributes to the overall comfort levels, especially on long road trips.
Cargo Flexibility: Even though the Terrain’s cargo capacity is a little smaller than some competitors, it makes up for that in flexibility. There’s an available hands-free power tailgate (SLT and above), activated by sweeping your leg under the rear bumper. Inside, not only do the rear seatbacks fold flat, but the front passenger seat also has a fold-flat feature to accommodate extra-long items, like a kayak. It even has a hard plastic back to avoid damaging the upholstery.
Engine and Transmission: The lack of a more powerful engine option remains a sore point when it comes to the Terrain. On paper the 1.5-liter engine sounds fine, but in practice it’s sluggish, and attached to a transmission that needs more refinement.
