Many car companies have moved away from the four-door sedan in favor of the popular crossover, but Hyundai continues to offer the stylish Sonata. This midsize sedan moved into its seventh generation when it was redesigned for the 2020 model year. For 2023, the styling remains the same, but there have been some changes for the new model year. Among them: A larger 10.25-inch display screen comes to the SEL and N Line trim levels, and Highway Driving Assist is available exclusively on the Limited and N Line trims. Hyundai offers the Sonata in a range of trim levels—from the well-equipped SE to the higher-end Limited. Three powertrains are available that include the very efficient hybrid and the powerful 290-horsepower turbocharged engine in the sporty N Line. With a roomy interior and intuitive high-tech features, the Sonata holds its own against strong competitors like the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, and Nissan Altima.
Interior: The Sonata features a roomy cabin with good leg- and headroom for both front and rear seat passengers. Controls are easy to figure out with good ergonomics, and multiple USB ports are available front and rear. A wireless device charger is located ahead of the push-button gear selector, and there’s good storage space throughout the cabin.
Technology: The available 10.25-inch infotainment display is easily navigated and nicely integrated into the dashboard. The display can be split for instant access to many features, and the soft-touch buttons offer quick access to audio and navigation controls. Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ are standard on all Sonatas. The Sonata also comes standard with a long list of advanced driver-assist features.
Value: Hyundai built its reputation on building quality and desirable vehicles for a relatively low price, and the Sonata is no exception. With its spacious interior, long list of standard equipment, extensive warranty, and the latest in advanced driver aids, the low starting price makes the Sonata a great value.
Comfort: It may have a roomy, stylish cabin, but the Sonata is less comfortable than its competition. The seats are on the firm side without great support, and overall the ride is a bit stiff, making bumps and rough roads quite noticeable. This stiff ride also translates to a louder cabin in some conditions.
