2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a talented all-rounder

The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a midsize SUV that really can do a bit of everything. It displays decent road manners while remaining a go-to choice for ruggedness in the wilderness. An expansive range gives you plenty of options, with the 2014 lineup gaining a 240-hp 3.0-liter turbodiesel for excellent EPA-estimated fuel consumption. All engines also benefit from an eight-speed automatic transmission, helping both performance and efficiency. The gasoline engines are either a base 290-hp 3.6-liter V6 or a 360-hp 5.7-liter V8, with the range-topping SRT model coming with a scorching 470-hp 6.4-liter V8. Given that the SRT is priced thousands of dollars less than high-performance rivals from BMW M and Mercedes-AMG, you'll have cash to spare for the frequent gas stops.

For 2014, the Laredo base trim gets some new equipment, and the standard list includes alloy wheels, automatic headlights, keyless ignition and entry, dual-zone climate control, a six-speaker audio system with a 5-inch touchscreen, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The Limited adds a power liftgate, remote engine start, heated front seats and steering wheel, a power-adjustable driver's seat, and an 8.4-inch touchscreen with voice command. The Limited trim also offers the optional Luxury II Group and Advanced Technology Group packages, though if you move up to the Overland, their luxury features and driver aids become standard equipment. The SRT is the only Grand Cherokee that comes standard with four-wheel drive, though it's offered across the range. Jeep also offers numerous off-road-specific packages for the regular Grand Cherokee if you want to maximize that capability. A talented all-rounder, the 2014 Grand Cherokee is one of our top picks for a midsize SUV.

5 reasons to buy the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1. All-weather performance

The base four-wheel-drive system on the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee is Quadra-Trac I®, which is plenty if you encounter wet conditions in the winter or enjoy some light off-roading. If you plan to tackle trickier terrain or weather, the available Quadra-Trac II® features a two-speed low transfer case to help with tire slip. And if your adventures need an even more advanced 4x4 system, look for Quadra-Drive® models. This full-time 4x4 system gives you ultimate control, while the electronic limited-slip differential improves grip.

2. A range of driving modes

On all models with Quadra-Trac II, you'll get the Selec-Terrain® traction management system that lets you choose from a range of different driving modes. With Sand, Mud, Snow, and Rock modes, your 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee can handle whatever the road less traveled brings. Also standard on Overland and Summit trims is Quadra-Lift air suspension, which tailors your ride by adjusting the suspension height to easy maneuverability over rocks or uneven terrain.

3. Plenty of space

With a 36.3 cu-ft trunk, you've got plenty of space to stash your gear for a weekend in the mountains. If you need more space for trips to the home improvement store or to carry sports equipment, you can fold the rear seats to open up a total of 68.3 cu-ft of space. If you prefer to hitch up a trailer for your next getaway, the standard V6 engine on the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee can tow an estimated 6,200 lbs., when properly equipped.

4. Luxurious interior

Even though the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee is built for rugged practicality, it also boasts a comfortable, high-end interior. The base trim has a six-speaker sound system and USB media hub, alongside little details such as interior lighting in the front footwell. Climb the trims and things just get more luxurious. Look for the real wood and leather steering wheel on the Overland trim and up. The suede headliner on the Summit trim adds another level of class to an already good-looking SUV.

5. Lots of technology

Throughout all trim levels of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, you'll enjoy a wealth of technology. The base model has a seven-inch multi-view display and a five-inch Uconnect® 5 media system. Stepping up to the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited trim gets you rear park assist, a rearview camera, and much more. If entertainment is important to you, look for the Summit trim's Harman Kardon® premium sound system. This trim also features a range of driver-assistance features and adaptive cruise control.
