If you want a highly capable off-road vehicle, the Jeep Wrangler fits the bill. Its rugged, iconic look also appeals to plenty of people who might never take it off-road. The Wrangler competes with vehicles such as the similarly retro-styled Ford Bronco, the pricier Land Rover Defender, and the tried-and-true Toyota 4Runner.
For 2024, the Wrangler gets several updates as part of a mid-life-cycle refresh. Among the more notable changes are the restyled front grille, the updated Uconnect® 5 software with a larger 12.3-inch touchscreen, and new wheel designs. First- and second-row side curtain airbags are now standard on every trim except for the base Sport model, and the antenna has been integrated into the windshield. Noteworthy upgrades for those looking to blaze their own trails include an available factory-installed 8,000-pound-capacity Warn winch and a new Dana 44 HD full-float solid rear axle to improve towing capacity and accommodate larger tires. Various factors may impact towing capacity, including weight of passengers, cargo, and options/accessories.

Off-road capability: There simply isn't a better factory off-roader on sale. This is what the Wrangler was designed to do, and Jeep has continuously evolved it over the years. During Edmunds' testing, it breezed through the off-road test course and should be able to handle even the toughest trails. The available 37-inch tires give it even more potential once you leave the pavement.
Touchscreen interface: The new 12.3-inch screen is excellent. It is bright when you need it to be, and it dims enough at night so you don't get blinded. The tech inside feels faster and more responsive than ever. It never lags and is easy to understand.
Responsive transmission: The Wrangler's eight-speed transmission is great. It shifts smoothly and always seems to find the right gear. Taking manual control is easy, and when you put your foot down on the throttle, the engine responds quickly. It also is smart enough to keep you in a higher gear on downhill grades. There's no unusual shift engagement when pulling away from a stop or when coming down to one.
Noisy cabin: From the loud climate control fans to the ever-present wind noise and tire roar, the Wrangler's cabin produces a cacophony of noises. Given this truck's boxy shape and large tires, the noises are understandable, but they compromise the Wrangler enough that you may not be in a hurry to take it on any long road trips. It's worth noting, however, that the Wrangler is about as loud as the Ford Bronco, so it isn't alone in this regard.
