Lexus has a reputation for building big cruisers with luxurious cabins designed to carry their passengers in the utmost comfort, so a performance-oriented Lexus seems like a misnomer. The Lexus GS already had the makings of a sport sedan, but the GS F turns up the heat with a big V8 engine under the hood, retuned steering, sport suspension, and styling that showcases this model's higher level of performance. The GS F was introduced in 2016, and 2020 was its last year of production. While the standard Lexus GS was offered with various configurations, the GS F comes as a single trim level. Its primary differentiator is the 5.0-liter V8 engine under the hood, pumping out 467 horsepower and 389 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels. While the GS F is powerful, it's not as quick as some of its rivals from BMW and Mercedes-Benz, which feature turbocharged powerplants, and its interior is a bit dated compared to its competitors.
Interior: The 2020 Lexus GS F may be showing its age with its preponderance of analog controls, but they are straightforward and easy to use. The front seats are trimmed in leather with good bolstering for excellent support and comfort. Quality materials throughout the cabin—including inlaid carbon fiber on the dashboard—give the GS F a premium vibe.
Performance: It may not be as quick as some of its competition, but the GS F delivers excellent performance with sharp steering, adjustable torque-vectoring rear differential, and a big V8 engine that delivers smooth, strong power and a fantastic soundtrack from the quad exhaust outlets. The adjustable Sport suspension allows for nimble performance and still provides a smooth ride.
Storage: The Lexus GS F can easily handle a few suitcases or groceries in its trunk, providing 14.1 cubic feet of space. While the rear seats don't fold down, there is a ski pass-through to accommodate longer items. The cabin also features several small storage areas with large door pockets, a center console bin with a removable tray, and an additional fold-down console with a lid for rear passengers.
Technology: While the large display screen for the Lexus infotainment system is clear and easy to read, the interface is frustrating. Rather than using a touchscreen, the Lexus features a mouse-like controller in the center console, which is challenging to use even when parked. The Lexus does not offer Apple CarPlay® or Android Auto™ integration.
