The Mazda CX-5 is a compact SUV that is bookended by the smaller CX-30 and the larger CX-9. For the 2023 model year it only added a white paint choice, but Mazda did make one very notable change: the debut of the CX-50. It is very similar to the CX-5 in size and price, but its styling is a bit more sporty and aggressive. As with previous Mazdas, we expect the CX-50 to eventually replace the CX-5, but at least for 2023, they were sold alongside each other.
The compact SUV class is very competitive and popular among smaller families. The Mazda CX-5 sets itself apart from its rivals with elegant styling inside and out. It’s also one of the sportiest choices in the class, with a potent turbo engine option and handling that’s more engaging and entertaining than expected. It comes up a bit short on practicality, though, with less rear passenger and cargo space than you’d get with a Honda CR-V or Kia Sportage.
Strong overall performance: The CX-5 is one of the sportiest SUVs in its class. During testing by Edmunds, the base engine proved merely adequate, accelerating to 60 mph in 8.7 seconds, but the available turbo engine is a rocket by comparison, reaching 60 mph in only 6.6 seconds. On top of that, the CX-5 corners with more athleticism than any of its rivals. If you value performance but need the practicality of an SUV, this is where you should start.
Near-luxury interior: The CX-5 is also a class standout for its interior. It’s noticeably nicer than what you’d get from competing SUVs and can almost be considered worthy of entry-level luxury status (think Acura and Lexus). The dashboard has a simple elegance about it, with materials that are nicer than what you might expect and none of the novelties that some rivals use to add personality.
Attractive styling: Despite having its last full redesign back in 2017, the Mazda CX-5’s styling has aged extraordinarily well. It distinguishes itself from other SUVs with its sleek surfaces and muscular curves that blend seamlessly into each other. The large grille is also well integrated with the headlights and hood, giving the face a look that's equally sporty and classy.
Below-average passenger and cargo space: Rear headroom is about average for the class, but legroom is a bit shorter than in some of the CX-5’s main competitors. That said, average-size adults should find the space adequate. Cargo capacity behind those seats is somewhat limited at 30.8 cubic feet. By comparison, the 2023 Honda CR-V and Kia Sportage can accommodate more than 39 cubes.
