The 2021 Cooper Clubman has all the Mini charm plus added practicality

Whether in life or in relation to cars, fun and practicality are often at odds with each other. Take the diminutive Mini Cooper, for example. It’s incredibly entertaining to drive but lacks rear passenger space and cargo capacity. The solution is to simply make it bigger, and that’s where the 2021 Mini Cooper Clubman comes in. It stretches the four-door Mini hardtop by nine inches lengthwise to provide more rear legroom and a much larger trunk.

For 2021, we’re glad to see the return of the manual transmission, which is standard on the entry-level Classic trim and available on other models as an option. That makes the Clubman even more engaging to drive than before. Meanwhile, the midrange Signature trim adds an infotainment touchscreen with navigation and Apple CarPlay®. Taken together, these changes make the Clubman even more fun and practical.

5 reasons to buy the 2021 Mini Cooper Clubman

What We Like

Confident handling: Despite being larger than the Mini hardtop hatchbacks, the Cooper Clubman is just as rewarding to drive. On a twisty mountain road, its playful personality really shines. You can bound between left and right turns with precise confidence and there’s plenty of power, even if you opt for the base Clubman S.

Unique interior: The Mini Cooper Clubman’s interior takes inspiration from the classic Minis from the 1960s, with large round gauges, an upright posture, and retro-style toggle switches. Thankfully, there’s also plenty of technology woven in, to keep it competitive against newer rivals. In addition to personality, the interior benefits from praiseworthy materials and sturdy construction.

Potent John Cooper Works model: If your priorities in a car include stirring performance, the John Cooper Works (JCW) model could be a great fit for you. With 301 horsepower and all-wheel drive, it’s far more serious than the 189-hp Clubman S. Add in a sport-tuned suspension, larger brakes, and additional frame strengthening, and the JCW is a different beast altogether.

What Needs Improvement

John Cooper Works has a harsh ride: As thrilling as the John Cooper Works model is to drive, it makes big sacrifices in comfort. The suspension is very stiff and transmits every flaw in the road surface into the cabin. Larger potholes will send sharp jolts into your spine, and the firm seat cushion doesn’t absorb impacts all that well either. We recommend this model only to drivers who prioritize performance above all else.
