The 2020 Mini Cooper Countryman: The SUV with the spirit of a sports car

There are shoppers and drivers out there who desire more than just basic transportation, who also want performance, luxury, or personality. Mini Coopers have found their audience by offering distinctive retro styling and sporty driving dynamics, but the small hatchbacks fall short in terms of practicality. Mini's solution is the Cooper Countryman.

The 2020 Mini Cooper Countryman is the largest vehicle in Mini’s lineup, and it offers more space for rear passengers and features a larger cargo area. It’s a subcompact SUV similar in size to the Hyundai Kona or Mazda CX-30 and is available in several models ranging from mild to wild. For 2020, the plug-in hybrid model (reviewed separately) gets a larger battery, the John Cooper Works (JCW) receives a big power increase, and a new seven-speed automatic transmission debuts. These updates help make the Countryman a great choice for spirited drivers.

5 reasons to buy the 2020 Mini Cooper Countryman

What We Like

A variety of engines to choose from: The Mini Cooper Countryman’s base 134-horsepower three-cylinder engine is an appropriate choice for more conservative drivers, but we recommend the midrange Cooper S that produces 189 hp. For those who seek more power, the John Cooper Works (JCW) model gets a big power bump from 228 hp to 301 hp. If you’re looking to go green, there’s also a plug-in hybrid model, which we review separately.

Signature Mini style and personality: With unique retro-inspired styling and an undeniably cheerful disposition, Mini Coopers are some of the most recognizable vehicles ever made. The hunkered-down stance hints at the Countryman’s sporty handling as well as its confidence over less-than-ideal surfaces. And with endless customization options when they were new, you'll have a greater chance of finding a pre-owned Mini that's unique.

Captivating behind the wheel: Most subcompact SUVs are solid choices for commuters but aren’t all that inspiring to drive. The 2020 Mini Cooper Countryman not only works as a daily commuter, but it is also enjoyable enough to make you want to take the fun way home. While each model has varying degrees of performance, they’re all more entertaining than the typical SUV.

What Needs Improvement

Smaller cargo space than its competitors: While the Countryman may be more practical than its smaller stablemates, it still falls short of the mark set by other subcompact SUVs. Most rivals can carry 20 to 24 cubic feet of cargo behind the rear seats. The Countryman is limited to 17.6 cubic feet (about 22 grocery bags), which is more comparable to a family sedan or hatchback.
