Think of a Mini Cooper and you’re likely picturing the small hatchbacks from the 1960s or the new ones that pull heavily on nostalgia. There’s a good chance you’re beginning to crack a smile since they’re some of the most cheerful and zippy little cars on the market. As fun as they are, though, they come up well short when it comes to practicality.
The Mini Cooper Countryman addresses that shortcoming with its larger size. For 2022, it gains standard LED headlights, lane departure warning, and a new Boardwalk special-edition model. As a subcompact SUV, it’s similar in size to the Hyundai Kona, Mazda CX-30, and Volkswagen Taos. It offers significantly more rear passenger and cargo space than the Mini hatchbacks. That said, it still can’t hold as much as its rivals.
What you get instead is a perky ride that is as fun to drive as it is to look at. Sure, it may not be as handy as others, but surely you've heard the saying about all work and no play?
Good engine variety: The Mini Cooper Countryman offers four engine choices to satisfy a wide range of tastes and budgets. The base model comes with a 134-horsepower three-cylinder, the Cooper S upgrades to a 189-hp turbocharged four-cylinder, and the top John Cooper Works makes 301 hp. There’s also a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) Cooper SE All4 model, which we review separately.
Fun personality: It’s difficult to look at a Mini Cooper and not feel yourself start to crack a smile. The unique retro styling pulls heavily from the beloved Minis from the 1960s and the larger Countryman simply gives you more to love. In addition to the recognizable shape and styling flourishes, the interior has plenty of classic touches to give it a distinct vibe.
Thrilling to drive: A Mini isn’t a Mini unless it delivers more thrills and joy than other vehicles. Sure, it looks fun, but it offers performance to match. The base model is thoroughly enjoyable for most drivers, while the Cooper S turns up overall performance to satisfy sportier drivers. At the top, the JCW is best suited to those with an unquenchable thirst for power and handling.
Small cargo area: Sadly, not even the Mini Cooper Countryman can defy physics, at least when it comes to space. While we love the compact footprint that makes it fun to drive and easy to maneuver, cargo space suffers as a result. You can fit about 22 grocery bags (17.6 cubic feet) behind the rear seats, while other SUVs in the class have far more space, accommodating 20 to 24 cubic feet.
