The Nissan Armada is one of just a few full-size truck-based SUVs available in America. The largest vehicle in the Nissan lineup, the Armada offers impressive hauling and towing capability, a spacious interior, and a powerful V8 engine under the hood. Nissan gave the Armada a fresh look in 2021, and for the 2023 model year, styling remains unchanged. However, the big SUV is now available with remote engine start on the SV, the SL gets a heated steering wheel, and Armada SV, SL, and Platinum can be equipped with Amazon Alexa integration. Nissan offers the Armada in four trim levels: S, SV, SL, and Platinum. All trim levels come standard with Nissan’s 5.6-liter V8 engine producing 400 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque. Rear-wheel drive is standard, with the option of full-time four-wheel drive. Armada can seat up to eight people and can tow as much as 8,500 pounds. Various factors may impact towing capacity, including weight of passengers, cargo, and options/accessories.
Performance: With a big 5.6-liter V8 engine under the hood, the Armada never seems to lack power. Acceleration is surprisingly strong for such a large vehicle, and passing slower vehicles on a two-lane road is easily done. Braking power is equally impressive—according to the Edmunds Expert Review, the Armada could stop from 60 mph in just 123 feet, considerably better than the competition.
Utility: One of the primary reasons for purchasing such a large SUV is its hauling and towing capability, and the Armada doesn’t disappoint. There’s plenty of space behind the third row for cargo, and folding the seats down increases the space to almost 100 cubic feet. The potent V8 also makes towing a breeze, and most trims come standard with an integrated trailer brake controller.
Interior: The cabin of the Nissan Armada is quite spacious with good headroom and legroom, at least for the front seat and second-row passengers—the third row is admittedly cramped for adult passengers. The larger 12.3-inch display screen works well with Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay® connectivity. Multiple USB ports and a wireless charging pad keep everything powered.
Fuel economy: As a full-size SUV with a powerful V8 engine, fuel economy is not the Armada’s forte. The EPA rates the big Nissan at 13 mpg in the city, 18 mpg on the highway, and 15 mpg combined. Hook up a trailer, and those figures drop rather dramatically.
RepairPal gave the Nissan Armada an overall reliability rating of 3.5 out of 5 stars, which RepairPal describes as Above Average. This rating ranks Nissan Armada 3rd out of 16 among Fullsize SUVs.
