The 2022 Nissan Armada is an alternative to full-size SUVs from Ford and Chevrolet. Using a traditional body-on-frame type design (like a pickup truck), the Armada offers impressive capabilities, starting with the ability to tow up to 8,500 pounds. It is available with a four-wheel-drive system designed to tackle tough terrain, and the suspension and rugged chassis to back it up. But inside, the Armada offers up a quiet and comfortable ride, with the creature comforts you’d expect. There’s available leather seating, standard Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, advanced driver-assist systems, and even an around-view camera that makes parking in the city a (relative) snap.
Leading the Armada’s list of shortcomings is fuel economy, where two-wheel-drive models manage only 16 mpg on the EPA’s combined score, and four-wheel-drive models get only 15 mpg. Fuel economy figures are based on EPA estimates for when vehicle sold as new. Fuel economy may vary for reasons like driving conditions and vehicle history. Unless specified, figures are for vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission. See fueleconomy.gov. The third row is also cramped for anybody but children, and the trunk floor is high off the ground, making it harder to use. While the Armada has modern smartphone integration tech, the interface feels dated.
Driving: With a powerful V8 under the hood and a suspension that balances comfort and control, the 2022 Armada is easy and comfortable to drive. It handily out-accelerates the standard engines in rivals like the Chevy Tahoe and has plenty of passing power at highway speeds. The brakes are also strong and responsive—important in a big, heavy vehicle like this. On the road, the soft suspension soaks up small and medium-size bumps without fuss.
Towing: One of the reasons to buy a traditional full-size SUV is for its towing capacity, and here the Armada shines. Able to tow up to 8,500 pounds when properly equipped, the Armada can handle large trailers, a decent-sized boat, or other big loads.
Standard driver assist: We’re big fans of advanced driver-assist systems like automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and lane keeping assistance. And, we’re even bigger fans of vehicles that include these features as standard equipment, like the 2022 Armada.
Interior space: While the Armada is certainly big, the interior is on the cramped side, especially in the third row. The seat is low to the ground, and the legroom is tight, making it fine for small kids but uncomfortable for adults. Even the second row could use some improvement due to its fixed-in-place captain's chairs. Many rivals have seats that slide forward or backward. Then there’s the cargo area behind the third row, which is hard to use because it is so high off the ground. If cargo and passenger space are priorities, you might be served better by the Armada’s rivals.
