For those who pine for a proper German sports car but need room for the entire family, Porsche offers the high-performance four-door Panamera. Introduced in 2011, the Panamera nicely blends the performance of a Porsche 911 with the space and utility of a large sedan. Last redesigned in 2017, the Panamera comes into the 2019 model year with the addition of the GTS trim level. The Panamera GTS features a lower ride height, Porsche Sport Design styling touches, a distinctive interior, and a 453-horsepower twin-turbo V8 engine. Porsche offers the Panamera in three body styles: sedan, Sport Turismo wagon, and extended-wheelbase Executive. Aside from the base-level trim, all Panamera variants come with all-wheel drive. Five powertrains are available depending on the trim level selected, ranging from the turbo V6 in the Panamera base to the Turbo S E-Hybrid that puts out an impressive 677 horsepower. With remarkable performance from any of the engine options and the comfort of a luxury sedan, the Panamera holds its own against competitors like the Mercedes-AMG E 63, Audi RS 7, and BMW M6 Gran Coupe.
Driving: One of the quickest sedans on the market, the Panamera may be big and heavy, but it drives like a sports car. Steering is precise with excellent feedback, and the brakes perform very well. Handling is akin to that of a much smaller vehicle, and the ride is surprisingly smooth and comfortable, especially when it's equipped with the available air suspension.
Comfort: The front seats in the Panamera offer multiple adjustments to accommodate most drivers. The seat padding is thin, but support is excellent, providing a comfortable space, even for longer drives. The ride is stiff but not uncomfortable; the suspension absorbs any small bumps in the road, and the cabin stays very quiet even at highway speeds.
Interior: Getting in and out is made easier by the Panamera's short doors, which can open wide in tight spaces. While it does have the feeling of a cockpit up front, overall the Panamera is spacious and provides plenty of headroom. Rear seats offer good legroom to accommodate taller passengers, with even more room available in the extended-length Executive model.
Utility: Although the Panamera is a hatchback, there is limited space behind the rear seats. The shallow trunk space makes it difficult to load taller items; this is somewhat alleviated in the larger Panamera Sport Turismo. Storage spaces in the cabin are on the small side, with limited space for personal items.
