Early electric vehicles had a reputation for being weak, inconvenient, and lifeless. In the decade since, carmakers have cashed in on the best aspects of electric propulsion to make EVs not just worth considering but also downright desirable. Porsche’s first EV, the Taycan, drove that point home.
For 2022, the Taycan lineup grew with the addition of the midrange GTS model that artfully balances performance and luxury. An updated infotainment system corrected a past misstep by adding Android Auto™ phone integration alongside Apple CarPlay®. An automated remote parking system was also added as an option. It’s worth noting that a software update for the 2023 model is applicable to previous Taycans. It slightly increases range and DC fast-charging ability and also adds wireless phone integration.
The Porsche Taycan is easily one of the sportiest EVs that isn’t one of the million-dollar-plus exotics, with instant acceleration and handling that does the 911 proud. The related Audi e-tron GT is a solid alternative, while the Mercedes-Benz EQS is more luxury-oriented.
Impressive acceleration and handling: From behind the wheel, it’s difficult to believe the Taycan weighs over 5,000 pounds. Sure, EVs have an advantage when it comes to acceleration since all of their potential power is immediately available, and having a lot of its weight in the floor improves handling, but Porsche’s unique suspension tuning makes it special among its few rivals. It does indeed drive like a Porsche, and a smaller one at that.
Excellent DC fast-charging capabilities: One way to combat range anxiety and the perceived inconvenience of charging on a road trip is with DC fast charging. The Taycan’s 270-kW charge rate is one of the fastest, and if you’re lucky enough to find a working charger to match, you could replenish the battery from 5% to 80% capacity in only 22 minutes.
Impeccable interior quality: Porsche doesn’t cut corners when it comes to interior quality and construction, and the Taycan is no different. A satisfying sturdiness underlies every surface, eliminating any creaks when you’re driving hard or driving over potholes. Covering everything inside are sheets of premium leather and high-quality plastics to justify the rather exorbitant price.
Rear seats aren’t very spacious: Even though the Taycan can be thought of as a luxury sedan, don’t expect the kind of palatial spaciousness of a Mercedes-Benz S-Class or BMW 7 Series. The rear seats can hold an average-size adult, but the space can be rather confining. The low roofline also requires passengers to stoop down to access those seats. If that’s an issue for you, the wagon-like Cross Turismo offers more space and larger doors.
