The Taycan is Porsche’s first foray into electric vehicles. It’s similar in size and style to the Panamera sedan and has proven that a Porsche doesn’t need an internal combustion engine to be a Porsche. It has the performance and refinement to impress even the most rabid of Porschephiles, and then some.
Coming off its debut the previous year, the 2021 Taycan lineup gained a more affordable entry-level trim with a single rear-drive motor as well as a more practical wagon-like body style called the Cross Turismo. New features included a head-up display, satellite radio, and over-the-air software updates that allow owners to add features and keep a range of systems up-to-date.
As a high-performance electric sedan, the Taycan had few rivals in 2022. The Tesla Model S is the most competitive, but its only real advantage is acceleration, with the Tesla’s build quality and handling well below the Porsche’s standard. The Taycan’s range isn’t as generous, but it should still be enough for most owners.
Inspiring performance: Don’t let the idea of an EV powertrain fool you: The Taycan is a legitimate Porsche in every sense of the word. It’ll launch you to 60 mph in under 4 seconds and it does it with shocking ease. The Taycan also corners with the kind of joyful agility of Porsche’s iconic 911 sports car. As an added bonus, it’s also easy to drive and well mannered when driven conservatively.
Impressive DC fast charging: There aren’t a lot of DC fast chargers that can take advantage of the Taycan’s very quick 270-kW charge rate, but they will be more prevalent with time. That means the Taycan is already prepared for that eventuality and can get you back on the road in no time. At its highest speed, you can get from a 5% charge to 80% in 22 minutes.
Luxury-level interior: The Taycan may be biased toward performance, but it doesn’t skimp on luxury. You’ll get the sturdy build quality you’d expect from a top luxury sedan, along with premium materials inside that justify the rather expensive pricing. There’s also no shortage of higher-end features to keep passengers entertained, and over-the-air software updates will keep those features current for years to come.
Confining rear passenger space: If you’re planning to regularly transport more than one adult passenger at a time, you would do well to seek out the Taycan Cross Turismo. It has a longer wagon-like roof, provides more headroom, and allows for easier access to the rear seats. The standard Taycan has two inches less in headroom and can be confining even for average-size occupants.
