Ram introduced the next-generation Ram 1500 pickup in 2019. But with the previous generation still selling in high numbers, the company continued offering the older model under the Ram 1500 Classic moniker. Considering the Ram 1500 Classic was last fully redesigned in 2009, the truck delivers impressive utility and a comfortable, spacious cabin. However, the Classic is stripped-down and offered in fewer trim levels with just two engine options available.
The 2019 Ram 1500 Classic is available in trims ranging from the basic Tradesman to the well-equipped Laramie. Ram also added a Warlock edition to the Classic lineup with bold styling and a one-inch lift kit. Offered with a regular, quad, or crew cab, the Classic gets either the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 or 5.7-liter HEMI® V8 with rear- or four-wheel drive. With unique features like the RamBox® bedside storage and a flat load floor in the cabin, the Ram Classic remains a strong competitor to the stalwarts in the category—the Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado—and, to some extent, its newer replacement.
Driving: The Ram 1500 Classic may be riding on an old chassis, but it remains one of the smoothest-driving trucks on the market. Even on rougher pavement, the big truck soaks up the bumps, delivering a stable, confident ride. Steering and handling are also exemplary for a pickup truck, and the cabin remains surprisingly quiet.
Comfort: It may not be up to the level of the all-new 2019 Ram 1500, but the Classic features stylish seats—both front and rear—that are supportive and comfortable. There’s plenty of space in the cabin, especially in the crew-cab variants, and the ride is smooth enough to keep fatigue to a minimum. The automatic dual-zone climate control adds to the overall comfort.
Utility: You would think that since the Ram 1500 Classic is an older design it wouldn’t have the capability of some of the newer models on the market. However, this big truck holds its own with a towing capacity of 10,710 pounds.
Technology: Technology is often the first feature to show its age, and the Ram 1500 Classic is no exception. Most trims get just a five-inch touchscreen display with limited phone integration. However, those who opt for the higher Laramie trim can get a larger 8.4-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ integration.
