Ram first introduced the Promaster 2500 back in 2014. With a narrow, light frame, the 2020 Promaster 2500 is offered in two sizes, depending on your cargo and towing needs, and is fitted with a 280-horsepower engine and front-wheel drive to make loading and handling easier. 2020 sees an increase in the estimated maximum towing capacity, which should give you ample support to hitch a trailer for those extended hauls. Combine all that with a roomy interior upfront, and the Ram Promaster 2500 is a robust full-sized van adaptable to your commercial needs.
1. Front-wheel emphasis
When Ram chose to fit the 2020 Promaster 2500 with front-wheel drive, it was thinking about functionality. By engineering the FWD drive components in the front of the chassis, the Promaster 2500 reduces the load and step-in height. For a van made for loading and unloading, that's an essential ergonomic feature when you're getting in and out of the van all day. Plus, with all the power coming through the front wheels, the Promaster 2500 has improved handling on low-traction surfaces.
2. Singular powertrain
Under the hood of the 2020 Ram Promaster 2500 is a 280-hp 3.6L Pentastar® V6 engine. Paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, it produces 260 lb-ft of torque and can tow an estimated 6,800 lbs on the short wheelbase model and 6,480 lbs on the wide wheelbase model, when properly equipped.
The 2020 Promaster 2500 comes in a couple of different trims, to suit your needs. There's a short wheelbase version (136 inches) that can be found with either a standard or high roof. And there's a wide wheelbase version (159 inches), which comes fitted exclusively with a high roof. The cargo capacities between those options range substantially—from 303 cu-ft on the short wheelbase, to 420 cu-ft on the wide wheelbase. One important consideration is that the smaller model can actually handle a slightly higher estimated payload of 4,260 lbs.
Big box vans tend to feel a bit rigid around the turns. On the 2020 Promaster 2500, premium steering and ABS braking technology can help you avoid those extra-point turns. On the short wheelbase model, you'll enjoy a 40.7 ft curb-to-curb turning diameter. Add to that a MacPherson strut suspension up front with twin-tube shock absorbers, and you'll appreciate the Promaster 2500's smooth handling.
The 2020 Ram Promaster 2500 comes standard with four-way bucket seats featuring spring suspension and woven cloth. You should look out for other configurations, including premium six-way adjustable heated seats in cloth or vinyl. If you need a third seat upfront or easy access to the back, certain models come fitted with an integrated two-person bench seat, or swivel seats that can turn 180 degrees to give you easy cargo access.
