If you want the capabilities of a pickup truck but also want to be environmentally conscious, the all-electric 2022 Rivian R1T might be just the ticket. The first all-electric pickup truck on the market, the R1T now has rivals like the Ford F-150 Lightning.
It's less efficient than the F-150 Lightning, so you have to charge it more often (think of this as having poor MPG). And it can take a long time to charge due to its gigantic battery. It's also quirky in ways shoppers may find less endearing. Many actions are controlled by the touchscreen, and activating cruise control is far from flawless.
But there's a lot to like about the R1T. It has an eye-catching design and is packed with clever features. A "gear tunnel" that runs the width of the truck, a storage compartment under the back row, and a removable battery-powered speaker in the center console are just a few of them.
Incredibly powerful: The Rivian R1T can go from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds, which is ludicrously fast for a pickup. You won't have to worry about tight lane changes. That power, and the instant torque offered by electric vehicles, also make it great for off-roading.
Spacious interior: The R1T boasts a roomy interior. Passengers in the front and rear seats have plenty of legroom, and there are several clever storage options for items you don't want to throw in the truck bed.
Ridiculous towing ability: The R1T's towing stats are incredible when compared to other midsize trucks like the Toyota Tacoma. When properly equipped, the R1T can tow 11,000 pounds. That's enough to rival some full-size trucks.
Range and efficiency: The trade-off for all this power and versatility is how much electricity it takes to bring it all to life. The R1T can tow a large boat, but its range will suffer dramatically as a result. It can get you to a remote campsite, but it might not have enough range to get you home.
