53 city, 52 highway, 52 combined

Combine the recently redesigned Corolla compact sedan with the engine from the Prius hybrid, and the result is the 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid. While the name isn’t very imaginative, the fuel economy of this five-passenger four door is fantastic. The Corolla Hybrid gets an EPA-estimated combined 52 mpg, which is on par with many versions of the pricier Prius. Fuel economy figures are based on EPA estimates for when vehicle sold as new. Actual mileage will vary based on things like battery age, vehicle condition and history, driving and charging habits, accessory use, and driving conditions. Battery capacity may decrease with time and use. See fueleconomy.gov for more info. Similar to the Prius, however, it has sluggish acceleration and brakes that can feel grabby. At least the ride is comfortable in town and on the highway.
One modest downside is that Toyota offers only one trim level, the LE, and it can feel a smidge basic. But to its credit, the interior is nicely designed and the materials used are robust and hard wearing. Legroom in the second row is fine, though taller adults might find headroom to be less generous.
Fewer pit stops: How can you argue with an EPA-estimated 52 mpg average in city and highway driving?
Solidly built interior: Toyota equipped the Corolla Hybrid with an interior that feels built to last. It’s still pretty basic, granted, though all major controls are nicely arranged and the trim pieces don’t look like they came from the automaker’s budget bin.
Relaxing to drive: We’ve established the Corolla Hybrid is not going to set any speed records. There’s only so much you can ask of its 121-horsepower gas-electric powertrain. Yet its light steering and supple ride make this Toyota easy to navigate in city traffic and relaxed on the highway.
No Android Auto™: We could have gone with mentioning the lazy acceleration, but Google fans might be more put off by the lack of Android Auto™. It’s not available, even as an option. This seems an odd oversight considering how many features Toyota throws onto the Corolla Hybrid. However, Toyota did add it for the 2021 model year.
