The 2023 Toyota Corolla Hybrid gets a sizable number of improvements that make it a more tempting alternative to other gas-friendly models like the Kia Niro, Hyundai Elantra Hybrid, and even Toyota’s own (pricier) Prius hatchback. Lots of standard equipment at an affordable price mark the 2023 Corolla Hybrid as a great value. An exterior refresh even gives it a little more flair, though the biggest improvements relate to additional trims and upgraded features.
The SE and XLE trims now complement the entry-level LE, which was previously the only available version and felt too sparse. All-wheel drive, a rarity among compact sedans, is now available, though it does slightly dent fuel economy figures. If skipping refueling stops is your prime motivating factor, know the Corolla Hybrid’s 134-horsepower gas-electric powertrain gets an EPA-estimated 50 mpg in combined driving. Fuel economy figures are based on EPA estimates for when vehicle sold as new. Actual mileage will vary based on things like battery age, vehicle condition and history, driving and charging habits, accessory use, and driving conditions. Battery capacity may decrease with time and use. See fueleconomy.gov for more info.
Even better, every version is fitted with an updated infotainment system, wireless smartphone connectivity, and Toyota's upgraded suite of driver-assist features.
More trim choices: While the 2022 Corolla Hybrid was available in only a base-feeling LE trim, the 2023 adds two additional trims, the SE and XLE, offering more options and choice in the lineup. The range-topping XLE is equipped with heated front seats, navigation, a digital gauge display, and power-adjustable driver’s seat.
Fuel economy: Even with its slight boost in horsepower, the Corolla Hybrid is one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles available. Its combined EPA-estimated average of 50 mpg in city and highway driving is almost on par with the Toyota Prius.
Driver-assist equipment: With Toyota's suite of driver aids, every Corolla Hybrid is fitted with desirable driver-assist features like a blind-spot warning system, rear cross-traffic warning, lane keeping assistance, adaptive cruise control, and more.
It’s no sport sedan: The Corolla Hybrid is comfortable and easy to drive. Yet this is not a vehicle that begs you to push it hard through tight corners or rewards the driver with rapid acceleration. Keep driving dynamic expectations in check and you’ll be fine.
