First generation Toyota Corolla Hybrid
The Corolla is one of the oldest nameplates in the Toyota lineup, but it wasn’t until 2020 that this already-efficient compact sedan was fitted with a hybrid powertrain for the first time. Sporting the fresh, sleek design of the 12th-generation Corolla, the new hybrid used the same powertrain as the Prius but offered a more mainstream alternative at a lower starting price. Inside, the Corolla Hybrid had a clean, modern design, highlighted by an eight-inch touchscreen display. Apple CarPlay® was standard from the beginning, with Android Auto™ added in 2021.
Powering the Corolla Hybrid was a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine teamed with an electric motor, powering the front wheels. With only 121 horsepower on tap, the Corolla Hybrid did not deliver strong performance. However, it made up for the lack of power with fuel economy of 50 mpg or higher, depending on the trim, making it one of the most fuel-efficient sedans available without a plug. In 2023, the Corolla Hybrid got a slight power boost as well as available all-wheel drive.
