Toyota took the sport compact world by storm in 2023 with the GR Corolla. "GR" stands for Gazoo Racing, Toyota's in-house competition team, which designed the GR Corolla to compete with the best-performing street cars on the market. The GR Corolla features a turbocharged 1.6-liter three-cylinder engine rated at 300 horsepower, with torque delivered to all four wheels through a six-speed manual transmission. Braking and suspension performance are also upgraded to match the driveline's power. The available Morizo Edition comes with additional high-performance equipment.
Even with all that performance, the GR Corolla is surprisingly livable, with an intuitive clutch and comfortable seats. The ride is firm and sporting but still gentle, and the GR Corolla is easy to drive when you're going long distances. This is a hot rod that can be your daily driver. Downsides include more road noise than most cars, but that's typical of hatchbacks generally.
Acceleration: The 300-horsepower turbocharged 1.6-liter three-cylinder engine provides enough power to fling the GR Corolla forward when you step on the gas pedal. This car does 0-60 mph in about 5 seconds flat and will complete a quarter mile in 13.1 seconds.
All-wheel drive: This is almost a requirement for a performance car in the modern era. The all-wheel drive on the GR Corolla allows the car to distribute its power to all four wheels, so you get acceleration instead of spinning tires. The GR Corolla's AWD also gives the car excellent cornering manners.
Driver assistance: Toyota delivers the GR Corolla with a bunch of driver-assist systems, including adaptive cruise control, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, and automatic emergency braking. The array of driver aids makes the GR Corolla an up-to-date vehicle as well as a performance standout.
Cheap interior: As with many performance cars, Toyota gave the GR Corolla a comparatively economical interior. The suede-covered steering wheel and shift knob have a sporty feel, but a better interior would be nice.
