For the 2017 model year, Toyota upgraded the Sienna minivan's long-proven 3.5-liter V6 engine and added a new eight-speed automatic transmission, making the Sienna the most powerful van in its class. The 2017 engine produces 296 horsepower, up from 266 hp in prior years. The Sienna is also the only minivan of its era to feature available all-wheel drive. As a family vehicle, the Sienna stands out with seating for eight passengers, sliding side doors, a low step-in height, and massive passenger and cargo space.
Additionally, the Sienna includes a long list of family-friendly standard features, including antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front-seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, a driver-side knee airbag, a front-passenger seat cushion airbag, active front head restraints, and a rearview camera. Above all, the 2017 Sienna is known for its silky smooth ride. With all those features and more, the Sienna is a strong rival to top-rated minivans such as the Honda Odyssey and Kia Sedona.
Smooth ride: The Sienna's suspension design allows it to glide over the roadway, but it can be upset by bumpy roads. Still, few minivans ever leave pavement, so the driver's experience of the Sienna will be an extraordinarily nice ride.
Powerful drivetrain: This model year marked the introduction of a more powerful engine, rated at 296 horsepower, and a new eight-speed transmission. With this combination, the 2017 Sienna became the most powerful minivan of its era.
Available all-wheel drive: In 2017, the only minivan on the market with all-wheel drive was the Sienna. If you live in an area that experiences freezing winter weather or heavy rains, the confidence and traction provided by all-wheel drive can be a big selling point.
Second-row seats: The second-row seats in the Sienna are larger and more difficult to remove than those in other minivans. That can be a problem if you occasionally need to change your van from a people mover to a cargo hauler.
