Fresh from a complete redesign only last year, the 2019 Audi A5 coupe, convertible, and four-door hatchback return with only minimal changes. Enthusiasts should note that among the changes is the loss of the previously optional six-speed manual transmission. While it was only offered in the A5 coupe, it’s now been jettisoned in favor of a seven-speed automatic transmission. A 252-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and all-wheel drive serve as the sole powertrain in the A5.
Slide behind the wheel of an A5 and be prepared to enjoy a masterclass in material quality and well-thought-out controls. The infotainment interface is simple to use and comes standard with Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™. While it’s easy to load up on options and send the price of an A5 soaring, the base Premium trim comes with an ample roster of comfort, tech, and active driver-assist features.
All-wheel drive: Having all-wheel drive standard on every A5 makes this luxury vehicle a savvy choice for luxury-car shoppers who want added grip when roads turn slick with rain or snow.
Tech features: The MMI® infotainment system is user-friendly, and learning its various commands and menus doesn’t require a degree from MIT to master. The optional Virtual Cockpit digital gauge display is definitely worth considering too.
Trunk volume: For cargo-toting needs, the A5 Sportback is the obvious choice. It boasts more than 21 cubic feet of trunk volume behind the second row. To be fair, the A5 coupe’s 11.6-cubic-foot trunk isn’t bad for a two-door luxury car.
Goodbye, manual transmission: The six-speed manual transmission that was available in the A5 coupe is now gone. We understand most luxury-car shoppers head directly for an automatic gearbox. Yet enthusiast drivers will lament no longer having the option to shift for themselves.
