Stylish and sporty 2022 Audi A7 has a surprising practical side

As a five-passenger luxury sedan with a sloping roofline and large rear hatchback, the 2022 Audi A7 is both sporty-looking and practical, particularly in terms of trunk volume. The handy rear liftgate opens wide to reveal almost 25 cubic feet of cargo capacity. For 2022, the A7 adds a newly standard 10.1-inch touchscreen, Audi’s Virtual Cockpit Plus digital gauge cluster, and rear side airbags.

Getting the A7 down the road is a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 paired to a seven-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. A plug-in hybrid powertrain using a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder is available, delivering slightly more power overall plus an EPA-estimated 26 miles of electric range.

Refined to drive and elegantly appointed, the A7 is a unique alternative to traditional luxury four-doors — including Audi’s own A6 — along with midsize luxury SUVs with two rows of seating. The infotainment system has a steep learning curve, however, and confusing menus detract from the A7’s otherwise impressive roster of tech features.

What We Like

Performance: You can’t go wrong with any of the engine choices. The base 335-hp turbo V6 is powerful, and the available plug-in hybrid delivers similar acceleration and even better fuel economy. For a truly sports-car-like experience, consider the devilishly quick Audi S7 or RS 7.

Interior comfort: Not only is the A7's cabin a comfortable place to spend your time, it’s filled with quality materials that justify this sedan’s steep price. Sharp steering reflexes and a supple ride add to the A7’s appeal.

Cargo space: With its convenient rear liftgate, the A7 is surprisingly versatile when you have lots of stuff to bring along for the ride. A 40/20/40-split folding rear seatback and wide cargo floor make this Audi sedan a luggage-toting champ.

What Needs Improvement

Infotainment menus: The 10.1-inch touchscreen and digital gauge cluster have exceptionally crisp graphics. That’s the good news. The problem is the menus to access various functions are too layered and confusing, especially when you’re the one driving and trying to navigate through them.
