The BMW M5 is a high-performance sedan that combines seat-pinning acceleration and confidence on winding roads with the comfort and elegant styling one might expect from a luxury sedan. The M5 competes with vehicles such as the Audi RS 7, Mercedes-Benz AMG E 63, and Porsche Panamera. The 2022 BMW M5 had no significant changes, as it received styling and technology updates the year prior.
M5 models equipped with the Competition package received a number of notable features such as larger 20-inch wheels, a lowered sport suspension, an upgraded exhaust system, sportier front seats, and a 17-horsepower increase.
The M5 is so impressive that any gripes may seem trivial. Installing a rear-facing infant seat can be challenging due to the thickness of the M5's front passenger seat, and the M5's cabin isn't quite as luxurious as its competitors'. That said, although this M5 generation debuted in 2018, it still feels and performs every bit like a modern sports sedan.
Fun to drive: There are only a handful of luxury sedans that offer this level of power, excitement, and braking capability. The BMW M5 will take you to the edge of performance that is dictated only by your driving skills and the legal limits of the road. It does all of that while not advertising its many strengths.
Seating comfort: The M5's front seats are heavily bolstered to keep both driver and passenger firmly anchored when cornering. M5 models with the Executive package will have the added benefit of ventilated and massaging seats that take comfort to the next level. We experienced no fatigue after numerous hours on the road.
Reduced noise in the cabin: The M5 is still a luxury car, so it delivers on having a quiet interior. The good news is that it doesn't forget its performance side and you still can hear its V8 soundtrack, which is a good thing in our book.
Menu-heavy operating system: BMW's iDrive operating system does require a bit of a learning curve. It is densely packed with information, settings, and entertainment features, but you'll need to know where those items are in the menus and use either the touchscreen or the rotary control knob.
