The BMW M5 is a midsize luxury sedan that flies under the radar of most passersby but has the heart and performance of a dedicated sports car. The M5 competes with vehicles such as the Audi RS 7, Mercedes-Benz E-Class AMG E 63, and Porsche Panamera. For 2023, BMW offered two new M5 paint colors, San Remo Green metallic and Skyscraper Grey metallic. Audiophiles should consider earlier model years as the Bowers & Wilkins surround-sound system was not available for 2023.
BMW M5 models equipped with the Competition package received a number of notable features, such as larger 20-inch wheels, an upgraded suspension, a sport exhaust system, racing-inspired front seats, and a 17-horsepower increase.
The M5 is so good that our complaints are minor. Installing a rear-facing child safety seat can be challenging, due to the thickness of the M5's front passenger seat. Also, depending on your tastes, some may feel that the M5's cabin isn't quite as luxurious as its competitors'.
Fun factor: If you are looking for driving excitement in a luxury sedan, look no further. The BMW M5 will take you to the edge of performance that is dictated only by your driving skills and the legal limits of the road. It does all of that while flying under the radar not advertising its many strengths.
Comfortable seats: The M5's front seats are aggressively bolstered to keep both driver and passenger firmly anchored when cornering. M5 models with the Executive package will have the added perk of ventilated and massaging seats that take comfort to the next level. You're not likely to experience any seat fatigue after numerous hours on the road.
Quiet but not too silent: Despite the M5 being a performance sedan, it doesn't forget its luxury roots and has a relatively quiet cabin. That said, it doesn't isolate the sound enough to make you forget about its throaty V8, which is a good thing in our book.
Menu-heavy entertainment system: BMW's iDrive operating system does require a bit of a learning curve. It offers tons of information, settings, and entertainment features, but you'll need to know where those items are in the menus and use either the touchscreen or the rotary control knob.
