Practicality and convenience are some of the main reasons shoppers have made SUVs so popular, but what if you're also looking for a little excitement and fun? That's where the 2020 BMW X2 comes in. This sleek subcompact SUV is based on the boxier X1, but it adopts a sportier shape with a tapering rear hatch. And it doesn't stop at appearances. The X2 delivers strong overall performance and the kind of peppy fun you'd expect from a hatchback. Step up to the more powerful X2 M235i and performance becomes even more impressive.
For 2020, the X2 returns mostly unchanged. Last year's 6.5-inch infotainment touchscreen grows to 8.8 inches and navigation has been included on all models. This gives the X2 a bit more appeal than before and it's a great alternative to the BMW X1, the new Mercedes-Benz GLB, and Audi Q3. The X2's sporty shape cuts into interior and cargo space compared to these more conventional choices, though.
Sporty appearance: The BMW X2 may share a lot with the X1 underneath, but on the surface, they're very different. The X2 has a lower ride height, giving it a more athletic and hunkered-down look. Combined with its sloping rear hatch, it's positively sporty compared to the X1 and most other SUVs in the class. The BMW badges on the rear roof pillars add a bit of subtle spice too.
Luxurious cabin: The X2 may be an entry-level model, but it's still a BMW. That means its interior has to meet higher expectations compared to non-luxury SUVs, and we can confidently say it succeeds. The synthetic leather upholstery has the look and feel of genuine hides, and the quality of most materials elsewhere is excellent. There are some hard plastic elements, but they're not prominent and have solid construction.
Fun-to-drive: In base form, the BMW X2 is reasonably fun to drive thanks to plentiful power and sharp handling. But if you have a penchant for performance, you would do well to upgrade to the 301-horsepower M235i model that further benefits from better brakes and improved traction. It's worth noting that the X1 doesn't offer an upgrade like this. We'd also add the M Sport X and Dynamic Handling packages if you're serious about fun.
Limited interior space: As distinct as the BMW X2 is with its sporty shape, the design has some drawbacks. In particular, rear headroom is noticeably lower than it is in the related BMW X1 and cargo capacity is 27% less too. That limits passenger and hauling capabilities and could be a deal breaker for more pragmatic shoppers. On top of that, the thick rear roof pillars cause some rather large blind spots.
