The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 gets much-needed updates

The Chevrolet Silverado 2500 is a large heavy-duty pickup truck that occupies the sweet spot of value and capability, for those times when you need more towing capacity than a Silverado 1500 but not as much as a 3500. It competes with the Ford F-250, the Ram 2500, and its own corporate sibling, the GMC Sierra 2500.

For 2024, the Silverado 2500 sports a grille and headlights with updated styling. LT trims and higher receive an updated interior, which features a 13.4-inch touchscreen display and a 12.3-inch screen for the gauge cluster. The available 6.6-liter turbocharged V8 diesel engine gets a sizable bump in power to 470 hp and 975 lb-ft of torque. This raises the maximum tow rating to 22,500 pounds when properly equipped. Various factors may impact towing capacity, including weight of passengers, cargo, and options/accessories. Both the diesel and standard gas V8 engines get a new 10-speed transmission that replaces the six-speed from years prior. Finally, there's a new ZR2 off-road version of the truck that's primed to take your adventures farther off the beaten path than before.

5 reasons to buy the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

What We Like

  • Slick operating system: The Silverado's 13.4-inch display is faster than the Ram's Uconnect® and features a higher-resolution display than Ford's SYNC®. The Silverado’s Google-based infotainment setup is much quicker to respond and easy to get the hang of. It's not too menu-heavy, and the smartphone integration boots up quickly.

  • Strong and smooth diesel powertrain: The tested diesel engine easily gets up to speed and is well suited for highway passing or climbing up a hill. The new 10-speed transmission feels perfectly married to the engine. The shifts are quick enough, and there are no head-toss-inducing hard shifts.

  • Good interior ergonomics: The controls are tactile and easily within arm's reach; everything is where it should be. The knobs, buttons, and switches are all big, which means they should be easy to use if you're wearing gloves.

 What Needs Improvement

  •  Visibility: The Silverado 2500's large size and height can make seeing other vehicles a challenge. Wide-angle side mirrors help to some extent, but their size can also hinder visibility to the front. Looking over your right shoulder to check your blind spot often yields a view of the rear pillar instead.
