The 2024 Ford Maverick

The 2024 Ford Maverick is a compact pickup truck that’s small in size but big when it comes to utility and versatility. Thanks to an available fuel-sipping hybrid powertrain, it also delivers excellent fuel economy. If more power is what you’re after, however, the Maverick can be outfitted with a 250-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder and off-road-themed hardware like four-wheel drive, underbody skid plates, and beefy all-terrain tires.

Changes for the 2024 model year relate to a role reversal of the two available engines. The turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder is now standard, whereas the 191-horsepower hybrid 2.5-liter four-cylinder is now optional. Positioned below Ford’s larger pickup offerings, the Ranger and F-150, the Maverick competes with the likes of the Hyundai Santa Cruz and lower-priced versions of midsize trucks such as the Nissan Frontier, Chevrolet Colorado, and Toyota Tacoma.

What is new for the 2024 Ford Maverick?

  • Enhanced fuel efficiency with updated engine technology.
  • Standard safety features now include adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist.
  • New infotainment system with improved user interface and navigation capabilities.
  • Optional all-wheel drive now available on select trims.

What We Like

  • Fuel economy: Some truck shoppers will demand the extra power and stronger acceleration of the 250-hp turbo four-cylinder. But we think the gas savings of the (now optional) hybrid powertrain makes it worthy of a test drive. It delivers an EPA-estimated 42 mpg in city driving and 33 mpg on the highway.

Those are outstanding figures for a hard-working pickup truck.

  • Standard tech features: Ford doesn’t skimp when it comes to the Maverick’s onboard tech items. Even the entry-level XL trim comes with an eight-inch touchscreen, two USB ports, Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto connectivity, Bluetooth®, and a Wi-Fi hotspot.

  • Tremor off-road package: This gives the Maverick the chops to venture over some truly rough and rugged terrain. Available on XLT and Lariat trims with four-wheel drive, the Tremor package adds a 1-inch suspension lift, low-speed cruise control, a locking rear differential, and orange-colored exterior and interior trim accents.

What Needs Improvement

  • Firm suspension: The Maverick won't rattle you to pieces on bumpy roads, but it certainly won’t fool you into thinking you’re wafting along in a luxury vehicle. Ford opted for a pretty firm ride in its smallest pickup. Yet we wouldn’t be surprised if many truck shoppers prefer this more, well, truck-like setup than the cushier feel of a typical small crossover or SUV.
