The 2020 Honda Odyssey gets a minor transmission upgrade

The Honda Odyssey is a comfortable, practical eight-passenger minivan that offers an extensive list of available features. For 2020, Honda has made the smooth-shifting 10-speed transmission standard across the entire range instead of just on the top trim level. That’s a nice upgrade for most shoppers. The Odyssey’s big trick is the second-row seats, which can be rearranged independently to allow for multiple configurations and easier third-row access. And of course there are tons of technology and convenience features as you move up through trim levels.

The Odyssey’s weaknesses are relative: It doesn’t have all-wheel drive like the Toyota Sienna, and there’s no hybrid option like the Chrysler Pacifica. Also, in order to access maximum cargo space you have to remove the bulky second-row seats.

5 reasons to buy the 2020 Honda Odyssey

What We Like

Practical interior: With spots to stash everything from water bottles to purses around the cabin, the Odyssey offers lots of practical storage. But one of the major innovations is the configurable second row, which has three independently sliding seats able to move forward, backward, and side-to-side. You can keep kids closer to the front seat, or further away from each other, and get easier access to the third row.

Lots of tech: A full suite of driver aids, including features like automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control, is standard on all trims except the base LX. The same is true for Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto, and an extra pair of USB ports for second-row passengers. On higher trims there’s also a rear-seat entertainment system, a rear-seat camera with night vision, and even a built-in vacuum cleaner.

Good to drive: With plenty of power from the V6 engine and some of the best handling in the class, the Odyssey makes the case that you can own a minivan and still enjoy driving. The steering is quick and precise, and the Odyssey feels confidently stable around corners, all while delivering a comfortable ride.

What Needs Improvement

Max-cargo flexibility: While the Odyssey has a massive maximum cargo capacity, it takes a bit more work to open up than competitors like the Chrysler Pacifica. You can’t get power-folding third-row seats, and to get the most space you’ll have to remove the bulky second-row seats from the vehicle.
