The 2022 Jaguar E-Pace remains one of the sportier and more head-turning choices among a wide array of small luxury SUVs. This includes direct rivals like the BMW X2, Acura RDX, Audi Q3, Mercedes-Benz GLB, and Lexus UX.
A 246-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder serves as the base powertrain, while a 296-hp version of this engine is fitted to the range-topping 300 Sport trim. Each engine is paired to a nine-speed automatic and all-wheel drive is standard. The cabin of the E-Pace is nicely furnished and features an 11.4-inch infotainment screen that runs Jaguar’s Pivi Pro software. Smartphone connectivity with Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ is standard, as is wireless device charging and satellite radio. Overall space for passengers and cargo is fine for this class of SUV, though the E-Pace’s pert tail does sacrifice some second-row headroom in the name of style.
Performance: Either of the two available turbocharged four-cylinder engines provides swift acceleration in city or highway driving. Having all-wheel drive standard means the E-Pace also won’t wilt when roads become slick with rain, sleet, or snow.
Design: This generation of E-Pace has been on sale since 2018 with only a subtle refresh for the 2021 model year, yet this Jaguar SUV continues to impress with its sports-car-like stance.
Standard features: You can load the E-Pace with extras, though it’s nice knowing you don’t have to. The base model comes with a large touchscreen, Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, a 12-speaker Meridian audio system, driver drowsiness monitor, and heated front seats.
Glitchy tech: While the E-Pace comes with the kind of technology that we like to see in a modern luxury vehicle, we do wish it all worked a bit better. The touchscreen works well, but if you try to use the built-in voice commands the system often takes a long time to respond, or simply won’t. The advanced driver aids are, again, good to have, but the lane keeping assistance sometimes lets the E-Pace drift out of its lane before responding, and the adaptive cruise control is too abrupt in its responses.
