If you’re seeking some off-road adventures but would prefer to explore the wilderness in relative luxury, there are a handful of capable vehicles. The Lexus GX 460 has been at it since 2010, with standard four-wheel drive and a long list of all-terrain equipment. It’s also a Lexus, which means it has a much nicer interior than the typical midsize SUV.
For 2023, the GX 460 returned with only minor changes. The Black Line Special Edition model added a surround-view camera system, while the top Luxury trim included premium Mark Levinson audio.
Unfortunately, these changes do little to bring the GX up to date. Its engine and transmission lack the power and sophistication that its newer rivals benefit from. The Lexus is nice, but we also recommend checking out newer alternatives such as the Land Rover Discovery and Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Strong off-road capabilities: The GX 460 is one of the few luxury SUVs with legitimate off-road credentials. With standard four-wheel drive and plenty of specific mechanical features, you’ll be able to explore areas that other SUVs can’t. If this is your main reason for looking at a GX, we also suggest finding one of the top Luxury trims with the optional Off-Road package.
Intuitive controls: There are a lot of buttons and knobs to control the GX’s various features and thankfully they’re all well labeled and logically grouped. Unlike many of its contemporaries, you won’t have to dig through on-screen menus to find what you’re looking for and many functions can be activated without even taking your eyes off the road.
Commanding view of the road: Having an elevated ride is one of the main reasons shoppers gravitate to SUVs. The GX 460 takes that to new heights (pun intended), towering over more conventional midsize SUVs. It gives you a great vantage point whether you’re weaving your way through traffic or trying to navigate past obstacles on a wooded trail.
Poor fuel economy and acceleration: The GX 460 is estimated by the EPA to get 15 mpg city, 19 mpg highway, and 16 mpg in combined driving. Those are dismal numbers for a modern midsize SUV, and even its off-road-capable rivals are able to exceed 20 mpg combined.
RepairPal gave the Lexus GX 460 an overall reliability rating of 4 out of 5 stars, which RepairPal describes as Excellent. This rating ranks Lexus GX 460 5th out of 29 among Luxury Midsize SUVs.
RepairPal reports that the average total annual cost for repairs and maintenance on a Lexus GX 460 is $499, compared to an average of $642 for Luxury Midsize SUVs and $591 for all the vehicles RepairPal considered in its dataset.
According to RepairPal, Lexus GX 460 owners bring their vehicles into a repair shop for unscheduled repairs an average of 1.0 times per year, compared to an average of 1.4 times for Luxury Midsize SUVs and 1.3 times for all the vehicles RepairPal considered in its dataset.
RepairPal reported that the probability of a repair being a severe or major issue is 7% for the Lexus GX 460, compared to an average of 13% for Luxury Midsize SUVs and 14% for all the vehicles RepairPal considered in its dataset.
