The 2019 Mitsubishi Mirage is a fuel-efficient, low-priced four-door hatchback

With a low starting price—one of the lowest in America—the Mirage resides at the entry point into the Mitsubishi lineup. The compact four-door hatchback comes into the 2019 model year with no changes to exterior styling. However, the small Mirage added standard features for 2019, including cruise control and a driver's seat height adjuster. Mitsubishi has also added a new LE trim with 15-inch black-finish alloy wheels, heated front seats, and red interior accents. The Mirage's most significant appeal comes in its low price and impressive fuel economy. Rated at 39 mpg combined, the small Mitsubishi achieves the best fuel economy of any non-electrified model in the U.S. Fuel economy figures are based on EPA estimates for when vehicle sold as new. Fuel economy may vary for reasons like driving conditions and vehicle history. Unless specified, figures are for vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission. See fueleconomy.gov. There are sacrifices made to come in at such a low price—features are limited, and the trim materials feel very basic, even when compared to other models in this class, like the Chevrolet Spark, Ford Fiesta, or Kia Rio. Performance is also lacking, with power coming from a tiny three-cylinder engine.

5 reasons to buy the 2019 Mitsubishi Mirage

What We Like

Fuel economy: One of the Mirage's top features is its fuel economy. According to the EPA, the small hatchback is rated at 39 mpg combined, the best in its class.

Fuel economy does drop slightly with the manual transmission. Unfortunately, that fuel economy comes at a performance cost: The Mirage's tiny three-cylinder engine puts out a meager 78 horsepower.

Utility: With 17.2 cubic feet of storage space behind the rear seats, the Mirage provides a reasonable level of utility—more so than some of its competitors, like the Ford Fiesta or Toyota Yaris. Rear seats are split and they fold—when laid flat, the space expands to 47 cubic feet, enough to accommodate larger items. Storage space in the cabin is less impressive, with very little room for personal items.

Technology: Mitsubishi offers Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto compatibility for the Mirage, a feature not always found on cars costing considerably more. The infotainment system displays on a relatively small 6.5-inch touchscreen display. A larger screen on the base ES trim is not available with the phone integration. Navigation is unavailable, but smartphone integration takes care of this issue. An available Rockford Fosgate sound system brings surprisingly good audio performance.

What Needs Improvement

Comfort: The front seats offer very little support and are not terribly comfortable, leading to driver fatigue after just a short time behind the wheel. Legroom for rear passengers is tight, although shoulder room is reasonable. Interior noise is almost intolerable, with considerable vibration and noise from the engine and noticeable wind noise at moderate speeds.
