The Mitsubishi Mirage is an entry-level four-door hatchback and one of the lowest-priced vehicles in America. Aside from the newly standard automatic climate control, the Mirage remains unchanged from the 2019 model year. One of the Mirage's high points is its fuel economy—the EPA rates this small car at 39 mpg combined, making it the most fuel-efficient non-electrified vehicle available. Mitsubishi offers the Mirage in four trim levels ranging from the base ES to the top-level GT, available with a manual transmission or continuously variable transmission—the latter of which is the most fuel-efficient. Fuel economy figures are based on EPA estimates for when vehicle sold as new. Fuel economy may vary for reasons like driving conditions and vehicle history. Unless specified, figures are for vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission. See fueleconomy.gov. While fuel economy is impressive, it comes at the cost of performance. The Mirage is slow to accelerate off the line and works hard to get up to speed. The engine is loud when working hard, and there is considerable road noise at highway speeds. The Mirage is priced below most of its competitors, like the Kia Rio, Nissan Versa, and Honda Fit, and the interior trim reflects its low price.
Fuel economy: The Mirage is rated at 43 mpg on the highway, making the Mirage the most fuel-efficient non-electrified model available in America.
Storage: Considering the small size of the Mirage, the hatchback design provides a reasonable amount of cargo area. The 17.1 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats is enough for a trip to the grocery store or a few small pieces of luggage. The space expands to 47 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down to accommodate oversized items.
Interior: The Mirage features a 6.5-inch touchscreen display with simple and intuitive controls. Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ are available—with no factory navigation system, phone integration is the best option for in-car navigation. There's good space for the front passengers, and the lightweight doors make for easy entry and exit. Rear seat passengers have decent shoulder room; however, the legroom is tight, making it less than ideal for adult passengers.
Performance: The Mirage attains its impressive fuel efficiency by sacrificing performance. With just 78 horsepower available from its tiny three-cylinder motor, the Mirage is woefully underpowered, working hard just to get up to highway speed. The brakes are reasonable, but performance is lacking during emergency braking situations. Small 14-inch tires and vague steering don't bring much confidence to the drive.
