The 2022 Nissan Versa is a well-equipped, inexpensive, compact 4-door sedan

The Nissan Versa compact four-door sedan is not only the lowest-priced model in Nissan's lineup, but it is one of the least expensive new cars in America. While the price is low, the Versa doesn't feel like a cheap econobox. Since its redesign for the 2020 model year, this third-generation Versa offers up a roomy, stylish interior with a long list of available features. For the 2022 model year the Versa remains unchanged from the previous year.

The 2022 Nissan Versa is available in three trim levels: the S, SV, and SR. With prices starting well below $20,000, the Versa comes standard with the latest advanced driver aids as well as a range of comfort and convenience features. Powering all Versas is a 122-horsepower 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine driving the front wheels, teamed with either a continuously variable transmission (CVT) or a five-speed manual on the base-level Versa S.

5 reasons to buy the 2022 Nissan Versa

What We Like

Interior: The Versa has a surprisingly spacious interior for such a small car—even rear-seat passengers will be pleased by the extensive legroom and headroom. The seats are firm but comfortable, providing good support for front and rear passengers. Overall, the cabin looks upscale with an integrated infotainment display, which is user-friendly and straightforward to operate.

Fuel economy: The Versa’s 1.6-liter engine isn’t very powerful, but this subcompact sedan compensates with remarkable fuel economy. The Versa with the CVT achieves an EPA-estimated 32 mpg in the city, 40 mpg on the highway, and 35 mpg overall.

The manual-transmission Versa is less efficient, delivering about 5 mpg less across the board.

Value: The Versa offers more than one would expect from the average economy car with a price well under $20,000. Even the entry-level Versa S comes with modern driver-assist and convenience features as standard equipment. The Versa has a stylish exterior and interior, and it feels like a well-built, solid car on the road.

What Needs Improvement

Performance: The Versa's 122-horsepower engine is perhaps its weakest feature. No one expects a small economy car to have lots of power, but the Versa feels quite slow, especially when you're trying to accelerate to freeway speeds or climb a steep incline. The manual gearbox makes the car more responsive, but it still feels low on power.
