The 2023 Nissan Versa compact 4-door sedan is one of the lowest-priced new cars in America

The Nissan Versa is a compact four-door sedan that anchors the car company's lineup. One of the lowest-priced new cars in America, the Versa delivers a spacious, comfortable interior with a healthy list of standard features. Versa was redesigned entirely in 2020 when it came into its third generation, and for 2023 the small car gets a number of updates that includes refreshed front styling, available wireless phone charging, and an eight-inch touchscreen display.

Nissan offers the Versa in three trim levels: S, SV, and SR. All variants are powered by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine driving the front wheels. The Versa S is also one of the few new cars on the market available with a five-speed manual gearbox. The rest of the lineup comes standard with a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

5 reasons to buy the 2023 Nissan Versa

What We Like

Fuel economy: The Versa's engine may be one of the least powerful on the market, but it makes up for this deficiency with impressive fuel economy. When equipped with the CVT, the Versa delivers an EPA-estimated 35 mpg combined (35 mpg city/40 mpg highway). The manual-transmission Versa does not perform quite as well, delivering an EPA-estimated combined fuel economy of 30 mpg.

Interior: The Versa's cabin is surprisingly roomy given the car’s small size. The seats offer good support, and while they are a bit stiff, they are comfortable even for rear-seat passengers. The integrated infotainment display gives the cabin a premium vibe, and the system is intuitive and easy to use.

Value: With a starting price well below $20,000, the Versa delivers much more than the typical econobox. Even the base-level Versa S is equipped with the latest advanced driver-assist features as well as a long list of convenience items. The Versa is stylish inside and out and doesn't feel cheap.

What Needs Improvement

Performance: With one of the smaller engines on the market putting out just 122 horsepower, the Versa is not a quick performer. While there is enough oomph in most situations, acceleration to highway speed or dealing with a steep incline results in a noisy engine without much in the way of increased speed.
