The lowest-priced model in the Porsche lineup, the five-passenger Macan SUV joined the brand's lineup in 2015. Since it came to market, the Macan has been Porsche's bestseller, passing the larger Cayenne SUV. While the overall design didn't change for the 2020 model year, Porsche brought back the high-performance GTS and Turbo variants that had been dropped a year earlier. Porsche also added the option of tungsten carbide-coated brakes.
The Macan is a bit smaller than other five-passenger crossovers, with less rear seat room and cargo space. But as a Porsche, the Macan prioritizes performance over utility with excellent handling and a range of powerful engines available, including a 434-horsepower powerplant in the Macan Turbo. Still, the Macan offers a reasonable level of utility, and all-wheel drive comes standard on all trims. Inside, the Macan has all the trappings of a luxury crossover, which help to justify the higher prices and put it on par with high-performance SUVs from BMW and Mercedes-AMG.
Performance: It may not be a 911, but the Macan is most definitely a Porsche. Each trim level offers different levels of power, but even the base model handles like a sports car with excellent braking and sharp and responsive steering. Upper-level trims all feature turbocharged engines with quick acceleration and a pleasing exhaust note, making the Macan more enjoyable than most compact crossovers.
Comfort: The Macan has a firm suspension, which makes driving enjoyable but doesn't make the ride uncomfortable. Front seats offer multiple adjustments to fit a driver of just about any size, and the seats provide nice support. The optional leather trim gives the Macan a more luxurious feel, putting it on par with compact crossovers from brands like Lexus and Mercedes-Benz.
Technology: Porsche offers the Macan with a range of high-tech features, including wireless Apple CarPlay®, wireless phone charging, and multiple USB ports. The large 10.9-inch infotainment display is easy to read and has a customizable screen for quick access to essential features. The Macan is also available with the latest advanced driver-assist features, including emergency braking assistance and lane departure warning.
Value: The base price of the Macan is in line with other high-end compact crossover SUVs, but many features, such as keyless start, a sunroof, and adaptive cruise control, are optional. Adding features typically expected in a premium SUV can drive up the price of the Macan very quickly.
