Some may think it's sacrilege that Porsche sells a compact SUV, but the Macan has been one of the brand's best-selling models since its introduction in 2015. The five-passenger crossover comes into the 2018 model year unchanged from the previous year, still available with multiple engine choices that range from the base-level 252-horsepower unit to the 440-hp engine in the Macan Turbo.
It may be a compact crossover, but the Macan is pure Porsche. One of the best-handling SUVs on the market, the Macan features a rear-biased all-wheel-drive system and a quick-shifting seven-speed automatic transmission for impressive performance. While it is designed for carving up mountain roads, the Macan is still an SUV and can handle the occasional jaunts off the pavement. Like other Porsches, the Macan has a long list of optional extras that can quickly bring the price to uncomfortable levels.
Driving: The Porsche Macan is one of the best-performing compact SUVs on the market, with precise steering and excellent handling. According to the Edmunds review, the top-level Macan GTS is very quick off the line, reaching 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds. Overall the Macan is an excellent choice for an exciting drive up a mountain road or just cruising through town.
Comfort: The Macan's firm suspension contributes to its excellent handling, but the ride is quite comfortable, especially with the available adaptive dampers and air suspension. The optional 18-way adaptive front seats have leather trim, heating, and cooling, and they offer great support and comfort. Noise, vibration, and harshness are kept to a minimum, adding to the overall premium ride.
Interior: With excellent ergonomics and a low stance, the Macan is easy to spend extended time in. The seven-inch touchscreen display can be a bit confusing at first, but it doesn't take long to get familiar with the navigation and audio systems. The front seat feels roomy, thanks to the lower dashboard and large windows, but passengers will find the rear seat tight.
Utility: With only 18 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats, the Macan has one of the smallest cargo areas in its class. Folding the back seats flat expands the space to a more usable 53 cubic feet. Up front, the storage areas are limited to small door pockets, a glove box, and a small center armrest bin.
