The 2018 Subaru Crosstrek is a roomy compact crossover with standard all-wheel drive

Subaru introduced the second-generation Crosstrek for the 2018 model year. The updated Crosstrek is built on Subaru’s new Global Platform and is the first significant redesign of the small crossover since it was introduced in 2012. The 2018 Crosstrek features styling similar to its Impreza sibling but is differentiated with matte black cladding, larger fender flares, and raised ground clearance. The Crosstrek has been one of the most popular models in the Subaru lineup since it arrived. The updated Crosstrek carries many qualities that made the original popular, including full-time all-wheel drive and 8.7 inches of ground clearance for impressive all-season and off-road capability unique to the compact crossover segment. Subaru offers the Crosstrek in three trim levels: 2.0i, 2.0i Premium, and 2.0i Limited. All Imprezas are powered by a 152-horsepower 2.0-liter engine teamed with a six-speed manual gearbox or a continuously variable transmission.

5 reasons to buy the 2018 Subaru Crosstrek

What We Like

Interior: As it moves into its second generation, the Crosstrek gets more interior space, providing a roomy, spacious cabin. There is good legroom and headroom for passengers in front and back, and the large windows and small pillars bring plenty of natural light into the cabin. The Crosstrek’s raised ground clearance brings the seats to just the right height to smoothly slide in and out for easy entry and exit.

Technology: The Crosstrek comes standard with a 6.5-inch display screen, with higher trims getting an 8.5-inch screen. Both are easy to use, with large icons similar to those on a smartphone interface. Apple CarPlay® and Android Autointegration is standard on all trims, and the optional Harman Kardon audio system delivers good audio quality, adding to the driving enjoyment.

Driving: With just 152 horsepower from its 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, the Crosstrek feels somewhat underpowered. However, the small crossover makes up for this deficiency with responsive handling, precise steering, and a well-controlled ride. Brakes provide predictable stopping power and are easy to modulate smoothly in city traffic. The Crosstrek is most impressive when the pavement ends. With its high ground clearance, all-wheel drive, and available hill descent control, the Crosstrek is one of the better off-roading compact crossovers.

What Needs Improvement

Utility: It may have a spacious cabin for passengers, but the Crosstrek’s cargo space is less impressive. The small Subaru crossover has just 20.8 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats, considerably less than its competition. There is a solution, though: With the split rear seat folded flat, space for cargo more than doubles.
