Toyota introduced its model 86 sport coupe in 2012 under the youth-oriented Scion brand and called it the FR-S. When the Scion brand was retired, the 86 was one of just a couple of models that remained in production under the Toyota badge, and 2017 was the first year the car was offered as the Toyota 86. The model received a refresh at the same time that included a nominal five-horsepower output upgrade, new transmission gearing and suspension tuning, and lightly restyled bodywork.
What you get with the 86 is a lightweight rear-wheel-drive car, about 200 horsepower, and your choice of a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. The rear fastback opens up as a hatch. The main competitor to the 86 is its twin, the Subaru BRZ. Both cars are made on the same production line using almost all the same parts. The 86 also competes with the legendary Mazda Miata as a lightweight sports car. Other competitors come from premium brands like Porsche, with much higher price tags.
Performance: There's no denying that the 86 is what's called a "momentum sports car," which means that it has lower horsepower but handles well enough to carry speed through corners. It combines crisp, predictable handling and enough engine power for you to enjoy the driving experience.
Comfortable seating: The front seats are well bolstered and cradle the driver, as you'd expect from the seats in a proper sports car. The rear seats exist, but they're mainly there to hold your backpack or purse. For practical purposes, consider the 86 a two-seat car. Better yet, fold those seats down and expand the cargo space.
Excellent price for performance: The Toyota 86 has always been an affordable way to get into a sports car. That virtue continues on the used market. When you compare it to other performance cars, the 86 offers a great value on a truly fun vehicle you can easily drive every day.
Technology: Even for its day, the 86 was a little short on dashboard tech and driver assistance. As a sports car, the thinking was that the 86 could be a little bit stripped-down to basics, but we would have liked it better if it supported smartphone integration like Android Auto™ or Apple CarPlay®.
