The 2023 Prius is a complete break from the four previous generations of Toyota’s practical and fuel-conscious hatchback. With its stylish and swept-back shape, the Prius has been transformed into a car you’d buy on looks alone.
Yet fear not, there remains a highly efficient four-cylinder hybrid powertrain under the hood. Except it’s now been tuned to deliver far more power than before, and the result is stronger acceleration combined with EPA-estimated mileage of more than 50 mpg on the highway. Fuel economy figures are based on EPA estimates for when vehicle sold as new. Fuel economy may vary for reasons like driving conditions and vehicle history. Unless specified, figures are for vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission. See fueleconomy.gov. Depending on whether it's ordered in front- or all-wheel-drive format, there is a total of 194 or 196 horsepower.
The cabin also gets a makeover with a conventional instrument layout that includes a choice of an eight-inch or 12.3-inch touchscreen and, in a first for a Prius, a digital gauge cluster mounted in front of the driver. A couple of drawbacks with the slinky 2023 Prius are that rear headroom and cargo space is notably less abundant than what you got in the previous iteration.
Sleek new shape: The headlining feature of the 2023 Prius is its shape. Toyota took a bold risk by making its long-serving mileage champ make such a bold styling statement, but there’s simply no escaping the fact the design makes many rival hybrids—not to mention a number of pricier EVs—look absolutely dowdy.
Punchier acceleration: The 2023 Prius has about 70 more horsepower than the outgoing model. This makes a sizable difference during the cut-and-thrust nature of city driving, or when you need to make a quick passing maneuver at highway speeds. Available all-wheel drive also means the Prius won’t wilt when the weather forecast turns messy.
Fuel economy: Toyota made it look better and go faster, but the automaker also made certain the Prius continues to deliver outstanding fuel economy. The most efficient version—the front-wheel-drive L trim—gets an EPA-estimated 57 mpg in city driving and 56 mpg on the highway.
Headroom and cargo space: Two drawbacks to the 2023 Prius are its skimpy rear headroom for taller passengers and a trunk that measures in at a max of 23.8 cubic feet. For comparison, the 2022 Prius had 27.4 cubic feet of space. The cargo area is also noticeably shallower and slimmer than before.
