The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan is a solid SUV with room for a road trip with friends or a vacation with the family. But it also has a trick up its sleeve—this small SUV comes in two- or three-row configurations, with seating for up to seven in the three-row model. Opt for the two-row model and you'll find cargo space that rivals even larger vehicles, giving you enough room to go on a shopping spree, family vacation, or hardware store trip to gather materials for a weekend project. Four trims are available, starting with the base S trim, then on to the SE, SE R-Line Black, and top-of-the-line SEL R-Line. VW's 4MOTION® all-wheel drive is available on S, SE, and SE R-Line Black models, and is standard on SEL R-Line models. While there are many options to choose from, the Volkswagen Tiguan is one of the few small SUVs to offer seating for up to seven, while still delivering the fuel economy numbers of a much smaller vehicle. Fuel economy figures are based on EPA estimates for when vehicle sold as new. Fuel economy may vary for reasons like driving conditions and vehicle history. If you want to move people in a vehicle that isn't massive, this Volkswagen SUV is a great choice. While we currently do not have many 2022 Volkswagen Tiguans on our lots, we look forward to selling more in the future. If you love the 2022 model, you should also consider prior model years of the Volkswagen Tiguan with similar features. Keep reading to learn more in our 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan review.

However, this is one of the few three-row compact SUVs out there, so it's a great option if you need a couple of extra seats in a pinch—perfect for city dwellers who need to navigate tight parking spots.
If you opt for the two-row model of the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan, you'll be greeted with a cavernous rear storage area capable of swallowing more stuff than many other compact SUVs. Boasting 37.6 cu-ft of cargo space behind the second row and 73.4 cu-ft with the rear seats folded, the Tiguan has space for camping gear, your latest garage sale find, or tools and materials for a weekend project.
The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan is a supremely comfortable commuter vehicle. It floats over rough pavement and imperfections in the road, allowing your passengers to sit back and enjoy the ride. At speed, the Tiguan is a quiet and serene place to spend time, with little road or engine noise to distract you.
Interior materials have been updated for the 2022 Tiguan, with all models gaining VW's eight-inch digital cockpit instrument cluster. Top trims have a 10.25-inch digital cockpit pro feature. Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ integration are standard across the Tiguan lineup, so you can take your favorite playlist, podcast, or audiobook with you wherever you go. Your first- and second-row passengers will love the USB-C ports that allow for fast charging speeds when they plug in their devices.
The Tiguan got a facelift for the 2022 model year, giving it a bold and aggressive appearance. LED headlights are standard on all trims, so the 2022 Tiguan sports a premium look and feel. Clean lines across the exterior give this compact SUV a timeless look that's sure to be a crowd-pleaser.

Exterior styling was updated for the 2022 Tiguan, most notably up front with standard LED headlights and a refreshed design. Inside, all 2022 models have an eight-inch Volkswagen digital cockpit instrument cluster, with an optional 10.25-inch upgraded version available on the top trim. Materials and design have been updated inside as well, and can be accessed with standard keyless entry and push-button start.
2022 Volkswagen Tiguan models come in four trims: base S, mainstream SE, more premium SE R-Line Black, and top-of-the-line SEL R-Line. The engine is the same in all models. The three lower trims have standard front-wheel drive and optional all-wheel drive, while SEL R-Line models come standard with Volkswagen's 4MOTION all-wheel drive.
A leatherette steering wheel is available on the base S trim and is standard on the SE trim of the 2022 Tiguan. SE R-Line Black models have a perforated leather-wrapped R-Line sport steering wheel. Only the trim-topping SEL R-Line has a heated steering wheel.

In the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan, split-folding second-row seats slide forward and back to make more room for cargo, or to allow more room for passengers in the optional third-row seat. But each trim offers a different experience as you buckle up for a trip.
S models have a standard cloth interior in either Storm Gray or Titan Black. In gray models, only the seats and door panels have gray trim; the dash and carpet are black, and the door panels and dash have aluminum-looking trim. Gloss black plastic surrounds the infotainment screen and climate controls, giving visual distinction to each area of the dashboard.
SE and SE R-Line Black models are treated to leatherette seating in three different colors. Storm Gray and Cinnamon interiors feature much less black inside, with only the upper part of the dashboard and doors trimmed in black.
SEL R-Line models have leather seats in gray, black, or a classy two-tone brown and black. In addition, wood accents replace the aluminum in this top-level trim.
Both rear outboard seats in the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan have two lower anchors that are easy to find, but sometimes difficult to maneuver around. The middle-seat location has no lower anchors and must solely use the seat belt for lower LATCH points. All three mid-row seats have an easy-to-find and easy-to-access rear tether anchor on the back of the seat.
There is only one engine offered in the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan: a 2.0L turbocharged and direct-injected four-cylinder engine with 184 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque. That torque is available down low in the RPM range, meaning the Tiguan feels much sprightlier in traffic than its power numbers would suggest.
Most Tiguan models are equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission and either standard front-wheel drive or optional all-wheel drive. Top-trim SEL R-Line models are exclusively AWD. The 2022 Tiguan can go from zero to 60 mph in 9.1 seconds (according to the manufacturer, when new). The Tiguan has an EPA-estimated 23/30 mpg city/highway; 4MOTION all-wheel drive sacrifices one mile per gallon in both scenarios.
2013-2017 Volkswagen Tiguan (first generation)
The first generation of the Tiguan was a smaller overall vehicle than the second generation, with more trims to fit your style. The small size and more powerful 200-hp engine meant the first generation had more pep in its step than the larger second generation. But with its smaller size came less interior room—a maximum of 56.1 cu-ft of cargo space behind the front seats, and no option for a third row.
2018-present Volkswagen Tiguan (second generation)
Updated in 2018, the second-generation Tiguan is much larger than the model it replaces. Clean, boxy lines define the style of the second-gen Tiguan, a departure from the cute and curvaceous first generation. Second-generation models have an extra wheelbase, more interior spaciousness, and an optional third row for a maximum capacity of seven passengers. Updates for the 2022 model include revised front styling as well as standard features like LED headlights, a digital cockpit feature, and keyless entry.
