When you think of European luxury carmakers, Volvo typically plays second fiddle to more popular German brands. For those looking for a family vehicle, Volvo ranks higher and that’s one of the many reasons you should consider a 2023 Volvo XC60. It’s a small SUV that slots between the subcompact XC40 and midsize three-row XC90. For a small family, the XC60 could be a perfect fit.
For 2023, the XC60 trim levels were renamed with some features shuffling between them. Meanwhile, the plug-in hybrid model benefitted from a boost in power and longer electric-only range.
The XC60 stands apart from other SUVs in the class with its classy Scandinavian-designed interior. It’s not as exciting to drive as the BMW X3, but it’s somewhat comparable to the Mercedes-Benz GLC, which was redesigned for 2023. Personality-wise, the Volvo is the sensible choice for families while rivals choose to focus more on performance or luxurious refinement.
Unique interior design: We liked the XC60’s interior when it debuted and, six years later, it has held up exceedingly well. The clean and elemental Scandinavian design is unique in a class dominated by German brands. Adding to the experience are plenty of choices for trim and upholstery, including a very attractive wool blend that feels more like an expensive suit than a car seat.
Focus on driver aids: The XC60 comes with a long list of standard driver-assist features, while most rivals offer them only on higher trims or as options.
Spacious rear seats: The XC60 is comparable to its main rivals in rear seat space and gains a slight advantage in regard to legroom. The sensation of spaciousness is enhanced by the airy feel of the cabin, though the big panoramic sunroof can cut into headroom for outboard passengers. The XC60 solidifies its position as the go-to family SUV in the class by offering an integrated child booster seat that pops out of nowhere in seconds.
Not as exciting as some rivals: The Volvo XC60 is marginally slower than the equivalent BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC, but it's still plenty powerful and quick for the typical driver. Bigger differences can be found in handling, as the Volvo is tuned more for comfort than cornering performance. It’s not out of sorts on a winding road, but it’s certainly not as engaging as the BMW. Admittedly, this likely isn’t a big concern for Volvo shoppers.
