The 2022 Volvo XC60 compact luxury SUV lineup has been refreshed to include a new mild-hybrid powertrain on all standard models, with Recharge models retaining its plug-in hybrid powertrain. The new engines add about 1-2 mpg of fuel economy over last year, depending on the trim. Additionally, the 2022 XC60 gets slightly refreshed front and rear-end styling.
As one would expect from a brand with Volvo’s reputation for prioritizing safety, the entire suite of driver assistance systems is standard on the XC60, a welcome change from many of its European rivals. The technology parade also includes a touchscreen infotainment system with standard smartphone integration, but it’s a bit difficult to use.
There’s plenty of space inside the XC60’s stylish interior, and it’s a pleasure to drive, with responsive powertrains and steering. The biggest dynamic drawback is a ride that’s stiffer than its rivals, but without an increase in handling capability. Aside from that one small blemish, the XC60 is a compelling choice.
Interior style and space: Volvo has its own approach to interior design, one that is uniquely Swedish. The tasteful use of wood and metal is understated but elegant, and we like the knurled finish on the various knobs. Plus, it’s comfortable, with great seats in the front and rear and plenty of room to stretch out.
XC60 T8 AWD Recharge: The Recharge version of the XC60 isn’t just a fuel-sipping option. It has the most power in the lineup, and mid-year it received a bigger battery and even more powerful electric motors in the rear. It comes together as a surprisingly sporty and fun to drive SUV, and the EPA-estimated 36 miles of electric range and 28 mpg combined score feel more like a bonus.
Standard driver assist: The trend in modern European luxury manufacturers is to offer driver assistance systems on higher trim levels, or as option packages. The Volvo XC60 is an exception, offering not just automatic emergency braking, but adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, and a full suite of other driver assist systems on every model. We just wish more luxury brands would follow Volvo’s lead.
Stiff ride quality: It may seem like a minor complaint, but the XC60’s ride quality isn’t up to the same level as its competitors. It’s too stiff over bumps, which intrude too easily into the passenger space. We’d be more willing to forgive this if the XC60 was a handling dream but it’s only average in that department.
