The 2022 Audi A4 maintains a successful formula
The 2022 Audi A4 continues the luxury sport sedan’s successful formula: quick, comfortable, connected. The A4's design hasn't changed much in five years, and it's starting to blend into the background. We're fine with that. The Audi’s conservative lines will age well, and even if it doesn’t kick-start your heart, it remains a pleasure to drive for work, home, or play. The roomy cabin easily accommodates four adults, and its tasteful design, punctuated with satin metal accents, makes the A4 feel like a car slightly from the future.
An updated infotainment system for 2020 reinforced that feeling, with a new fixed touchscreen display, revised software, and Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ smartphone integration. Updates in 2021 added standard all-wheel drive and boosted power levels: 201 horsepower for the base engine and 261 hp for the upgraded version. Minimal changes for 2022 included a standard sport suspension with the more powerful engine.

What We Like
Performance: The A4 is quick and smooth, with a quieter engine than most other turbo four-cylinder-powered competitors. Quiet doesn’t mean slow, though. The A4 dashes from zero to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds, a full second faster than earlier A4s and a shade faster than the BMW 330i. There’s also no denying the Audi’s impressive traction and neutral handling through curves and corners.
Interior: The A4’s stylish and functional cabin is a showpiece of fit and finish. There’s a clear emphasis on blending cutting-edge tech with traditional luxury details like satin metal accents, and you'll find knobs and switches that operate with precise action. The design is simple and elegant, highlighted by thoughtful placement of commonly used controls and innovative thinking. The optional digital gauge cluster takes some getting used to, but it brilliantly re-creates real analog gauges while also displaying navigation and infotainment. You’ll find sufficient legroom for four adults and plenty of ease getting in and out.
Technology: Audi has typically held an edge over its rivals with faster, sharper, and flashier in-car tech and infotainment. The 2022 A4 features a 10-inch touchscreen (an upgrade from earlier seven-inch and 8.3-inch displays), Audi’s latest software, and new refinements to the digital display. While some Audi enthusiasts may miss the dial controller found in older A4 models, the new touchscreen is an easy reach for most drivers, and the screen is angled slightly toward the driver.
What Needs Improvement
Engagement: The Audi A4 is well balanced but lacks a certain sizzle behind the wheel. Most of this comes down to steering feel. The best steering communicates to the driver what the tires are doing via resistance, effort, and weight. But the A4 feels a little numb, as if a gauzy layer separates the steering wheel and tires. The electric power steering control shares some of the blame, and while most drivers may never notice, those who like to dash through tight turns may occasionally be frustrated.
