The 2019 Audi A4 remains one of the best small luxury sport sedans, but challengers take aim

List your must-have attributes for a small sport-luxury sedan, and it’s a safe bet that the 2019 Audi A4 combines them. Quick, comfortable, and stocked with infotainment and connectivity features, the A4 is a joy to drive through tight mountain passes or on a stretch of freeway en route to work. A roomy cabin easily accommodates four adults and its tasteful design, accented with satin metal trim, makes the A4 feel like a car from just slightly in the future. That’s reinforced by infotainment features ranging from the high-resolution dashtop display to sophisticated navigation, voice controls, and Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ smartphone integration.

Under the hood, the 2019 Audi A4 generates 188 horsepower in front-wheel-drive layout or 248 hp with all-wheel drive. It also dropped the manual transmission. And in 2019, the A4 faced new challengers. The redesigned BMW 3 Series closed the gap on Audi’s tech and infotainment edge, but the “better car” will largely depend on personal preferences. The Genesis G70 joined the class but lacked the polish to mount a serious threat.

5 reasons to buy the 2019 Audi A4

What We Like

Performance: The A4 is quick and smooth, with a quieter engine than most other turbo four-cylinder-powered competitors. Quiet doesn’t mean slow, though. The A4 dashes from zero to 60 mph in just over 5 seconds, a bit faster than the redesigned 2019 BMW 330i, and it has impressive traction and neutral handling through curves and corners.

Interior: The A4’s stylish and functional cabin is a showpiece of fit and finish. There’s a clear emphasis on blending cutting-edge tech with traditional luxury details like satin metal accents and knobs and switches that operate with precise and damped action. The design is simple and elegant, highlighted by thoughtful placement of commonly used controls and innovative thinking. The optional digital gauge cluster re-creates real analog gauges, but can also display navigation and infotainment. You’ll find sufficient legroom for four adults, and plenty of ease getting in and out.

Comfort: The A4 favors sport over luxury, as evidenced by the firm but compliant ride that controls body motions and minimizes impact harshness. Seats are also firm, but pliable enough to remain supportive during hours of long-distance cruising. The optional sport seats are great, thanks to adjustable thigh support, but you can’t go wrong with the standard seats. The optional adaptive suspension offers a few different dynamic settings, but we wouldn’t go out of our way to find one since the standard setup is fine.

What Needs Improvement

Engagement: The Audi A4 is well-balanced overall, but the steering is a bit disappointing. Most of this comes down to feel, and the A4 just feels a little numb and distant from the tires. The tuning in the electric power steering unit shares some of the blame. The best steering communicates to the driver what the tires are doing via resistance, effort, and weight, but those characteristics feel a bit artificial in the A4. Most drivers probably won’t be bothered by this, and many may never notice. But drivers who like to dash through tight turns may occasionally be frustrated.
